Dimensionaut is the debut album by British-based band Sound of Contact, and was released worldwide May 2013. The album is a collaborative effort between Simon Collins and Dave Kerzner, founding members of the band. "Not Coming Down" is the album's first released single.

The album was produced by Collins and Kerzner and mixed by Nick Davis.

Concept

Dimensionaut is a concept album. Its plot follows an alienated, unnamed human individual, tired of humanity, who embraces his fate as a traveler of dimensions, time and galaxies upon the arrival of the "Cosmic Distance Ladder." Though unnamed, the protagonist assumes the role of a "dimensionaut" or "dimo," which he declares in the song "I Am (Dimensionaut)." Throughout the story, the dimensionaut constructs his escape from reality, realizing new experiences and encountering love in the process.

Promotion

Sound of Contact began promotion of the album December 2012 by releasing a video teaser in conjunction with an introduction of the band to the press. In March 2013, the band opened for Marillion, during "Marillion Weekend" in Montreal, Quebec, playing a number of songs from Dimensionaut for the first time in front of a live audience. On April 11, 2013, they released a video featuring excerpts from Dimensionaut. Six days prior to the release of Dimensionaut in Europe, a music video for the album's first single, "Not Coming Down," went public.

Sound of Contact's North American concert tour, "Bring the Prog Back", features a list of twenty other bands participating during August and September 2013. Sound of Contact's set list for the concerts consists of presenting Dimensionaut in its entirety.

Critical reception

Dimensionaut received both positive and negative reviews. Dawnofthedeaf awarded the album a perfect 5/5 star review, calling it "blinkin' brilliant" Jason Ritchie of Getreadytorock referring to the band's instrumentals as "superb". Metaltalk's Michael Foley mentioned the band's songwriting ability, noting "each song is arranged to enhance the mood and the melody" and "the producers and engineers have given us a warm yet detailed sound". James Davidson of MigMag gave the album 4 out of 5 stars, noting that Collins' drumming "proves he could easily keep up with his father in his prime."

Alan Neilson of Gettothefront gave a negative review of the album, stating, "there are far better ways of spending your time than listening to this escapist, faux sci-fi, juvenile, pompous, decidedly unprogressive music. It cannot be called progressive, when it is such a retrograde step..." He further stated, "Lyrically it is pretty shallow stuff, which is fine when you have outstanding melodies, but this does not" and "there is not enough room on this planet for the Sound of Contact." Carys Jones of Entertainment Focus, gave Dimensionaut 4 out of 5 stars, however, also stated that the song Omega Point "the song sounds like the main reason of it was to make the ending words of every line rhyme, without paying too much attention to the body of the lyrics"
