Accent for Daniela Santanchè
Hi Mushroom,
I spent a fair amount of time trying to figure out whether the accent should be acute or grave. Both versions are attested. Probably I went with acute because a grave accent on an e at the end of a word really looks pretty strange (the single-letter word è has a grave accent, but I can't immediately think of another exception, and all the conjunctions that end in ché have acute ones). Do you have a particular rationale for this choice?
By the way, I asked this question at it:discussione:Daniela Santanchè and never got a real solid answer. --Trovatore (talk) 06:17, 14 March 2013 (UTC)
- Hi Trovatore, here's my rationale:
- The "è" in Santanchè is pronounced /ɛ/. Italian grammar mandates the use of the grave accent for /ɛ/ and the acute accent for /e/ (though, as you can see, not everyone follows the rule — often not even the newspapers!).
- Santanchè's official website, Facebook profile, Twitter profile, and her husband's website all use the grave accent.
- There are some Italian words ending in "è", for instance tè, caffè, bebè, cioè, lacchè, and given names Noè, Mosè, Giosuè.
- The final "è" is quite common in place names in Northern Italy: Almè, Arsiè, Bianzè, Carrè, Cuorgnè, Dolcè, and so on.
- Many surnames from Northern Italy also end in "è": Maffè, Mattè, Bescapè, Germogliè, Caritè, and so on.
- The Santanchè family is from Northern Italy. Daniela's former husband Paolo Santanchè was born in Turin, Piedmont.
- I hope this clears it out. Cheers! Mushroom (Talk) 21:39, 14 March 2013 (UTC)
- OK, fair enough. Glad to have a definitive answer. --Trovatore (talk) 23:27, 14 March 2013 (UTC)
