The "Lu Ann Platter" is a popular combination platter served at this cafeteria chain. The dish is a half portion entree with vegetables. This plate was the inspiration for the character name Luanne Platter from the animated Texas comedy/drama, King of the Hill. The restaurant headquarters is currently located in Houston, Texas. It moved from San Antonio in 2004.
A deadly shooting spree occurred at a Luby's restaurant in Killeen, Texas on October 16, 1991 when George Hennard gunned down 24 people. This location was later reopened after cleanup, but it was later closed for good on September 9, 2000. It has not been positively determined whether the Killeen location's closing was due in part to the stigma surrounding it after the incident, or simply the result of the overall financial problems of the Luby's chain. Killeen had two stores, one closed down and became an Olive Garden, while the other location became a Chinese restaurant. The Chinese restaurant is the site of the shooting.
Not mentioned on the Luby's website, a famous Luby's in Wichita Falls remains family owned and independent of the corporate chain. It is known by locals and frequent travellers to serve the same style--albeit better quality--food as the chain Luby's.
