Biography
Early life
Mufaddal Saifuddin was born on 23 Ramadan 1365 AH (20 August 1946 CE), on the night of Laylat al-Qadr in Surat, Gujarat, and was given the name Aaliqadr Mufaddal (Arabic:عالي قدر مفضل) by his grandfather Syedna Taher Saifuddin. As a child he began the recitation of the Quran in Saifee Villa, Colombo, Sri Lanka.
On the milaad (birthday anniversary) of Taher Saifuddin on 27 Zilqad al-Haraam 1385 AH (18 March 1966 CE), Mufaddal received the laqab of Saifuddin, and the religious honorific title of Seqato Daawate Taiyebiyah.
Marriage
Mufaddal Saifuddin married Jawharat-u-Sharaf Bai Saheba on 22 Shawwal 1389 AH (1 January 1970 CE). They have five children: Jafar us Sadiq Bhai Saheb, Taha Bhai Saheb, Husain Bhai Saheb and two daughters.
Historic travel
Mufaddal Saifuddin was made Amirul Hajj in 1390 AH (1970 CE). After hajj, he travelled to Karbala, Shaam, Misr and Yemen. During his trip to Yemen, he laid the foundations for the construction of Syedna Hatim's rauza. After that journey Syedna Mohammad Burhanuddin bestoved upon him the religious honorific title Aqeeq-ul-Yemen in 1391 AH/1971 AD.
Succession
Nass on Mufaddal Saifuddin was performed several times.
Nass of 1388 AH/1969 AD (made public in 1432 AH)
Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin did Nass on Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin in 1388 AH/1969 AD. There are photocopies of the diary(kept safe by late Syedna in his personal cupboard)pages, written by Ibrahim Al-Yamani attributing certain passages to Syedna Mohammad Burhanuddin, reviewed (added Abdul Qadir) and concluded by Muhammad Burhanuddin himself in his own writing regarding nass, with content as follows:
"Date 11th, a Tuesday eve in the month of Zilqad al-Haraam 1388 AH (28th Jan, 1969 AD)...
"I am giving consideration to the investiture of the mansoos after me – thereby freeing my heart (of this). This night I am conferring Nass upon the apple of my eye, my radiant, beloved son, Mufaddal Bhai Saifuddin...
Witness:
- Al-Shaikh Ibrahim,
- Al-Shaikh Abdulhusain Tambawala,
- Abdulhusain al-Shaikh Ibrahim Abdulqadir.
I keep you as witnesses:,. This matter shall remain secret until it is revealed at its time... And I am Mamluk-e-Aale Mohammed al-Tahereen alayhim ul-salaam Mohammed Burhanuddin”.
Information of nass given in London, 1426 AH
Witness:
- Shezada Qaid Johar bhaisaheb,
- Shezada Malek-ul-Ashtar bhaisaheb,
It was told by two witness, after 3 Rajab 1432 AH/4 June 2011 CE, that Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin in 1426 AH/ 2005 CE had already revealed them that Mufaddal Saifuddin was his successor and also told them that not to disclose that unless the right time comes or after his death.
This incident is also documented in detail in Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin’s TUS Risalah Shareefah Zaat al Noor (1388 AH), that was published in 1432AH (after the Nass was made public).
Late Syedna told Mufaddal about Nass in 1430 AH.
Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin TUS had been informed that he was Syedna Burhanuddin’s mansoos, by Burhanuddin Moula himself. During the waaz (Sermon) on 4th Rabi al Akhar 1435, Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin TUS stated that Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin had in fact told him about the Nass in 1430H, Mufaddal Saifuddin was not able to remember the exact date, but he showed the dairy attested by Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin amidst thousands of people and was verified by senior members of the community.
Nass conferred and made public, London, 2011 AD/1432 AH
Huzurala (tus) had been admitted to hospital in London and on Saturday the 3rd of Rajab al-Asab (4 June 2011 AD) Molana (tus) summoned 6 Witnesses, those who were present .
Witness:
- Shahzada Idris bhaisaheb (dm),
- Shahzada Qusai bhaisaheb (dm),
- Shahzada Ammar bhaisaheb (dm),
- Shahzadi Husaina baisaheb (dm),
- Dr Moiz bhaisaheb
- Abdulqadir bhaisaheb
Molana (tus) said after Aouzo billah and Bismillah, that he was elevating ‘Mufaddal bhai’ to the office of Dawat. He asked them if they had heard him and then instructed that this should be informed to all.
The news of this historic event was conveyed to the Mumin world by Huzurala’s (tus) eldest son, Al-Qaidjohar bhaisaheb Ezzuddin (dm) in an address on the day of Urs (Death Anniversary) in London’s Al-Masjid al-Husaini. In this address He described the chain of events that took place the night before and the atmosphere of celebration that surrounded them. He eloquently extolled the supreme virtues of Syedi Mufaddal Mola (tus) in a speech of exemplary humility.
It was reported that at home the Dawoodi Bohra community welcomed the name of Mufaddal as a successor.
Nass ceremony at Raudat Tahera, Mumbai
Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin arrived at Raudat Tahera on 19th Rajab 1432 AH. Renewing the nass, He declared (as elucidated by Dr. Moiz bhaisaheb) “My name is Mohammed, Mohammed Burhanuddin, I have placed the crown of Nass upon Mufaddal bhai.” The video of the Nass ceremony is now publicly available. In the same video uploaded, at exactly (26:53 to 26:57), followers of Mufaddal Saifuddin claim that Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin says "Mufaddal Bhai ne Nass nu Taaj".
According to Mass Dawoodi Bohra, followers of Mufaddal Saifuddin, the above sequence of incidences are strong evidences for the claim that nass on Mufaddal was genuine and performed without coercion.
Controversy
However, Muffadal Saifuddin's succession has not been accepted by Khuzaima Qutbuddin, who claimed the title of the 53rd Dai of the Dawoodi Bohras Himself. Khuzaima Qutbuddin claims that Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin performed nass on him 49 years ago, a ritual during which he appointed him as his successor in private, just before he was publically appointed as Mazoon, second-in-command in Bohras hierarchy. After the death of Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin he claims that the succession was not done in London as Mohammad Burhanuddin suffered from a full stroke at the age of 100, that made it difficult for him to write, speak, or move. Khuzaima Qutbuddin explains that he never claimed to be the rightfull successor, as per Mohammed Burhanuddin's instruction to keep it secret. It is further claimed that former CJI upheld the validity of Khuzaima Qutbuddin as the rightful successor.
According to Husain, Son of Khuzaima Qutbuddin report. "..Ahmadi,..chief justice...wrote to Qutbuddin’s family, even before the late Syedna’s demise this month, expressing his opinion and support...". indicating that secret was made open to former CJI which contradict Khuzaima's claim of secrecy above and explanation not to claim as successor in public.
Demise of 52nd Dai Al Mutlaq Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin RA
In January 2014 late Syedna passed away, Mufaddal Saifuddin led the last rituals in which hundreds of thousands Bohras joined.
Indian Union Foreign Minister Salman Khurshid on 28 Rabi' al-thani 1435 AH (28 February 2014 CE) arrived to offer condolences to Mufaddal Saifuddin at his residence Saifee Mahal, Mumbai. It is reported that he presented a letter of good wishes from Indian Congress President Sonia Gandhi as Syedna left for his first trip abroad, to Iraq, after accession to the office of Da'i al-Mutlaq. The Minister then accompanied Syedna to the airport.
Other reports
Tens of thousands followers of Mufaddal Saifuddin, gathered at a public ground in Mumbai to endorse their solidarity and offer their condolences to their new spiritual leader Mufaddal Saifuddin. Their official representative alleges that wrongful claim by Khuzaima has aggrieved and has caused pain to Dawoodi Bohra around the world, as they have witnessed the 52nd Da'i al-Mutlaq publicly conferring – Nass (investiture) in 2011 in Mumbai, and had also explicitly reaffirmed it on many occasions since several years.
Followers of Mufaddal Saifuddin stage a peace march and protest half brother's claim. in many cities. Many Dignitaries met with Mufaddal Saifuddin and offered condolence. The World Muslim Congress also offers condolence in Press release..
Bohras who refuse to accept Mufaddal allege harassment, social boycott and threat of divorce. Pritish Nandy in Bangalore Mirror reported that "Meanwhile, the self declared new leader of the Dawoodi Bohras, the late Syedna's son, has asked all followers of the Islamic sect to not only declare their allegiance to him but abuse his uncle who the Syedna had anointed as his spiritual heir 50 years back." The 'Central Board of Dawoodi Bohra Community' which represent Progressive Dawoodi Bohra, a minority Bohra group alleges that both claims are not reliable and involves dispute over control of wealth.
