Corporal Gilad Shalit, a 19 year old Israeli soldier, was kidnapped by Palestinian militants early on Sunday, June 25, 2006. The militants attacked after crossing the border into Israel via a tunnel near the Kerem Shalom crossing at the south Gaza border. The statement came from Izzedine al Qassam Brigades (the military wing of Palestinian governing party Hamas), the Popular Resistance Committees (includes militants from Fatah, Islamic Jihad and Hamas), and the Army of Islam.
Cpl. Shalit is from Mitzpe Hila in the Lower Galilee, and holds dual Israeli and French citizenship .
