Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology, Surat (NIT Surat) is one of the 18 National Institutes of Technology (NITs) established in India in June 1961. It is named after Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, a noted freedom-fighter and India's first Home Minister. This institute was upgraded to a National Institute of Technology as per the National Institutes of Technology Act.

The college has a campus of over 1 square kilometre of land on the Surat-Dumas Highway. It was earlier called Sardar Vallabhbhai Regional College of Engineering and Technology (SVRCET). This institute offers seven undergraduate courses of Bachelor of Technology in various disciplines like Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, Electronics, Chemical, Computers and Production. It also offers postgraduate courses in Environmental engineering, Structural engineering, Water-resources engineering, Turbomachines, Mechanical, Electronics and Chemical Engineering. Some candidates are also pursuing PhDs.

The college is having in all nine hostels, eight for boys & one for girls students, with two additional hostels being built for PG students and girls, accommodating 1500 students totally. The sanctioned intake of students is currently 426. Fifty per cent of the seats are filled up from the Gujarat State and the fifty percent of the seats are reserved for the students from other states with quota fixed for every state. In addition to them, twenty foreign students are also admitted under the scheme of Central Government. Also at 2nd year level 32 students are admitted, who have passed diploma on merit basis.

The colllege has teaching facilities for Electronics engineering, Electrical engineering, Computer engineering, mechanical engineering, Prosuction engineering, Chemical engineering and Civil engineering. With additional facilities being planeed for Information technology.
