Being a grammatical type
You might check the next queue for DYK Template:Did_you_know/Queue/6 for some hooks to exercise you (both in the application and frustration meanings). Belle (talk) 12:50, 2 June 2014 (UTC)
- Oh dear. The Rambling Man (talk) 12:52, 2 June 2014 (UTC)
- Just too much. At least three if not four of those hooks need serious work. I have neither the energy nor the inclination to fix any of them, and hope they get noted at ERRORS as usual. The Rambling Man (talk) 13:04, 2 June 2014 (UTC)

Misplaced Pages:List of Wikipedians by number of edits
Hey Rambling Man--I'm picking on you since you're the most recent editor. One editor on the list has, as "qualification" (that is, user group), the note "massmessage-sender". That strikes me as a blow below the belt and I hadn't noticed it before. (I see now that at least two others have it also.) Do you know if "massmessage-sender" is kosher? Besides the awkward spelling and hyphenation, of course. Thanks, Drmies (talk) 15:19, 7 June 2014 (UTC)
- I guess it's kosher, there are far too many "flags" that people can collect these days, I'm sure it was easier in the old days when it was just editor or sysop or 'crat... The Rambling Man (talk) 16:18, 7 June 2014 (UTC)
Salvaging a cricketer
Hi TRM,
Just run across Munir Hussain (cricketer) when doing some maintenance - it looks like there was an attempt to move this to Munir Hussain (commentator) but the article inadvertently got forked in the process. The history is all at (commentator) but the version at (cricketer) has had quite a few edits by you since the move - would you be able to take a look at it and see what should be merged? I'd do it but don't want to just merge them blind without knowing the subject.
Thanks, Andrew Gray (talk) 16:01, 7 June 2014 (UTC)
- Hello Andrew. I'll take a look later, just in and feeding the little 'un. The Rambling Man (talk) 16:17, 7 June 2014 (UTC)

Hmmm.
Well, this was interesting. Did you know about this and this? Worth doing anything, or just drop it all for now? Montanabw 19:49, 11 June 2014 (UTC)
- Yeah, it's a shame, I know of User:SMcCandlish's high quality content edits from aeons ago, but right now the mindless pursuit of MOS-adherence undermines that. I didn't realise there were various past issues (which you've linked), but as you suggested, I'd just drop it all for now. He's having a hissy fit and is probably doing the right thing for everyone, taking a break and will hopefully come back in the guise I remember, an editor who is focused on actually enhancing mainspace articles, not just moving them and leaving a bunch of confused and inconsistent grammar behind. Ironically he seems to be implying that we're not making tangible improvements to mainspace articles, but as far as I can see, we're doing mainly that. Never mind, you can't please all the people all the time, and some are just utterly misguided. The Rambling Man (talk) 20:16, 11 June 2014 (UTC)
- On the content note, would you have any interest in doing a peer review on one of my articles pending FAC? Or, would you prefer to wait and be a FAC reviewer? Montanabw 22:23, 11 June 2014 (UTC)

- Cool. On that note, I see you have one GA under review below, if you have others up or need anything else reviewed, ping me, I do a pretty thorough GAN and I need wikicup points to stay alive in this round (won't be able to get CC to FAC in time even under the best circumstances...) Montanabw 23:24, 14 June 2014 (UTC)
- Sorry, today's been busy, as will tomorrow be, but I'll get back to Chrome by Monday, promise. Yes, I have around eight articles at GAN at the moment, all relating to The Boat Race, anything you'd like to review would be great. The Rambling Man (talk) 23:26, 14 June 2014 (UTC)
- Shoot me the link to the one that you'd most like to get done first, and I'll have at it. Montanabw 18:08, 16 June 2014 (UTC)
- I see you have email disabled here, but I'd like to drop you a short (relevant) note about this article, any way for that to happen? Montanabw 02:16, 17 June 2014 (UTC)

I hope there's no bad feelings about that conversation. I very much disagree, and I realize that some people sometimes take strong disagreement personally so let me just assure you that that is not the way it was meant. I mean, you're wrong, I'm right, but then again, you win, I lose. No grudges on my end, or changes in my respect for you. Just a note.Volunteer Marek (talk) 08:52, 15 June 2014 (UTC)

Hi TRM. This IP is without a doubt Daft, I've reported it in an SPI last week and while the initial IP which I reported was blocked, this one wasn't. Gaga
I don't think we should be referring, as given fact in passing, to the "inappropriate nature" of something unless that's somehow universally accepted. Just pull the hook. I don't know if you've been watching Talk:DYK for the last few weeks, but the inmates are in charge of the asylum. In one review I got dinged because "an image is in the wrong section", and meanwhile... My great-grandmother had a saying: "Straining at gnats and swallowing horses." EEng (talk) 19:47, 17 June 2014 (UTC)
- Fair enough, I didn't like my rewording anyway, I'll just stick to the facts... Stand by. The Rambling Man (talk) 19:48, 17 June 2014 (UTC)
- Or, we could just said that the performance "is said to be inappropriate", since that lets you say anything. I'm formulating a general rule in my mind: except for utterly trivial errors (e.g. mixture of US and UK spellings), any kind of hook problem should lead to the hook being pulled, not patched, on the assumption that the lack of competence that allowed the hook through may affect the article as well. EEng (talk) 19:57, 17 June 2014 (UTC)
- P.S One of your comments gave me a good idea. Instead of slowing the bot down, if we speed it up so that each DYK set appears for 1 second or less, then the amount of reputational damage to WP should be negligible. EEng (talk) 19:57, 17 June 2014 (UTC)
- Yep! It's a shame there are certain elements of the DYK crowd who seem to just want to blame the rest of us for the shit they happily allow onto the main page. I've tried a few times to discuss it or suggest they slow it down a bit, but I guess the lure of the fifteen minutes of fame (or shame) is too much... Like cats on catnip, DYK editors just get transfixed by the main page appearance and nothing else matters. The Rambling Man (talk) 20:00, 17 June 2014 (UTC)

Calling editors of judgment and discretion!
Materialscientist, Martinevans123, The Rambling Man: I appreciate you all meeting me here on such notice today, and to TRM in particular for providing the venue. I believe the time may be ripe for getting DYK on the right track. Shall we make a go of it? EEng (talk) 04:41, 19 June 2014 (UTC) P.S. Gamaliel too.
- As if I'd ever knowingly collude with the Great Satan of DYK. Martinevans123 (talk) 09:18, 19 June 2014 (UTC)
- I think any good ideas we come up with will be destroyed by the current DYK one-eyed hierarchy, certain editors there who "own" the project will need, at least, an RFC to get any real difference to take place. Meanwhile the DYK one-eyed hierarchy will sit back, crack jokes, blame the rest of us for the shit they are somehow allowed to pile onto the main page, then blame us further for not getting stuck into their curious "pile 'em high, sell 'em cheap" concept which is currently the main page toilet. The Rambling Man (talk) 20:19, 19 June 2014 (UTC)

Hi. Sorry to bother you, but is there a way of getting that Reflink tool you used on Daniel Keyes somewhere handy like in the left hand menu?
