Plot Summary

One day some human remains are found in the woods near the home of a wealthy recluse that Virgil Tibbs refers to as Sparta's version of Howard Hughes. Initally, officers are suspicious of an older woman named Adah Boone - who is often called The Pig Woman. Boone lives nearby, raises pigs, and chases visitors away with a shotgun.

The officers approach the wealthy recluse for help, he suggests they look at Boone. Later, while searching the property, they come across the badly decomposed remains of a male - officers estimate he had been there six to nine months. Testing reveals that the remains were those of the wealthy recluse. Boone is soon found dead on her farm. She was murdered, and her killer attempted to cover it up by making it appear to be a suicide - but Virgil Tibbs finds evidence that proves Boone did not commit suicide. Going to the recluse's house, they approach the figure pertending to be the wealthy recluse, and reveal that they found his remains. At that point, the figure tries to leave but is stopped by the officers, it was the man's disturbed son - who had been killing others for many years and dumping the remains in the nearby woods.
