Development
In late July 2013, it was reported that Koratala Siva would direct Mahesh Babu which would be produced by a big Bollywood production company. On October 21, 2013 UTV Motion Pictures announced that they are going to produce the film which marks their maiden Telugu production while Mahesh's sister Manjula Ghattamaneni would present the film on Indira Productions banner by issuing a statement to IANS. Later, Koratala Siva's projects with Ram Charan and N. T. Rama Rao Jr. were cancelled due to script problems while it was reported that the film would be delayed as Mahesh accepted to work in a film directed by Raj & DK and produced by Ashwini Dutt after completing the shooting of Aagadu. In late March 2014, UTV Motion Pictures South business studios chief G. Dhananjayan announced that the film would commence in July 2014 while the artistes and technicians would be announced in a week's time when there were reports that the film was shelved. It was reported that Devi Sri Prasad is selected as the music director of the film though there was no official confirmation.
Later in early April 2014, UTV Motion Pictures backed out of the project because of differences with Koratala Siva. Days later, Overseas distribution company Mythri Movie Makers announced that they would produce this film. Devi Sri Prasad was confirmed as the music director then while R. Madhi was selected as the cinematographer. In late May 2014, Koratala Siva dismissed the reports that the film is titled Parakrama. In early August 2014, it was revealed that the film would be launched officially on August 11, 2014. The film's opening ceremony was held on the aforesaid date at Ramanaidu Studios in Hyderabad and Mahesh Babu's wife Namrata Shirodkar along with few eminent Telugu celebrities attended the launch event.
Casting
In early April 2014, it was reported that Shruti Haasan may be casted as the heroine of the film though there was no official confirmation. In late April 2014, Jagapathi Babu was selected to play the role of Mahesh's father in the film after Koratala Siva was impressed with his work in the 2014 film Legend. Siva said "He didn't want to play a villain again so when I had approached him with this role, he instantly agreed to do it. He was very particular that he didn't want to get typecast in a role" to the IANS. Shruti Haasan was supposed to play the love interest of Mahesh in an untitled film directed by Mani Ratnam which would have marked their first collaboration. But that film was almost shelved and she was almost finalized as the lead actress in this film in mid-May 2014. By early June 2014, it was reported that the makers were in talks with her while the makers of Aagadu which also starred Mahesh approached her for a special song. She accepted the offer and danced for an item number in Aagadu along with Mahesh thus marking their first on screen appearance together.
On the day of launch, the makers confirmed that Shruti Haasan is finalized as the lead actress while Jagapathi Babu, Rajendra Prasad, Sampath Raj and Brahmanandam would play pivotal roles in this film in an interaction to the IANS.
Filming
Reports in late July 2014 stated that the principal photography would start on September 11, 2014 and would be wrapped up in continuous schedules. But after the launch, it was confirmed that the regular shooting would start in early September after Mahesh completes his work in Aagadu and will be completed in one long schedule. The first schedule was planned in Hyderabad and the second schedule was planned in Bangkok.
