Paul Thompson was born in Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland 13 May 1951. He lived in Jarrow from the age of six months and attended West Simonside Infants and Junior School. He is an English drummer best known for his work with the rock band Roxy Music from 1971 to 1980 and 2001 to the present day.

Between 1980 and 2001 he was drummer in the Oi! band, The Angelic Upstarts and The American alternative rock band Concrete Blonde. He joined the Ray Laidlaws's Lindisfarne in 2013.

Career

In 1965, Thompson joined a group called The Tyme which played at local youth clubs. Nect he joined a local band called The Urge when 17 years old. Tiredness from performing with them seven nights a week in local clubs and pubs led him to fall asleep on his job as an apprentice metalworker, which resulted in his dismissal.

He was a member of 'The Influence' with John Miles, before joining Roxy Music in 1971 with whom he toured and recorded six albums, as well as performing on solo records of his bandmates Bryan Ferry, Brian Eno, Andy Mackay and Phil Manzanera, also touring with them. In 1980, Thompson and Roxy Music parted ways due to "musical differences" and Thompson played with artists such as Gary Moore, Jonathon Perkins and Concrete Blonde. In 2001, he reunited with Roxy Music for a tour . He also toured with Ferry, supporting his Frantic album in 2003 and Thompson performed with Ferry's band on 11 June 2005 at the Isle of Wight Festival 2005. In 2009 Thompson's formed his own band, The Metaphors.

Influence and reputation

Drummer Roger Taylor of the new wave band Duran Duran has said that Thompson's drumming was a big influence over his development.

Thompson's fans have nicknamed him "The Great Paul Thompson", because of his extensive drumming skills and power.
