Elder of Ziyon, is an influential American pro-Israel blog. It is written anonymously.
The blog's name is an ironic reference to the anti-Semitic Protocols of the Elders of Zion, which makes the claim that Jews control the world. On his web page, "Elder" explains that the name of the blog "is meant to be ironic, of course. Now it makes it a little harder for me to be taken seriously by the media at large - on one occasion, the Jerusalem Post edited out a reference to me because it sounded too weird (the reporter told me that.)"
Due to the unusual spelling, the blog is often erroneously cited as "Elder of Zion".
Notable posts
On March 21, 2012 the blog published a scoop about a Turkish cosmetics company using Adolf Hitler in an ad for its shampoo.
On May 21, 2012 the American Zionist Movement sponsored a program that focused on pro-Israel advocacy. The panel discussion was called Israel in the Write Light, and the Elder of Ziyon appeared at the panel discussion, in disguise. Also at the panel discussion were Bari Weiss, a senior editor at Tablet Magazine, and Noah Pollak, an American political writer.
In January 2013 Elder delivered lectures at Yeshiva University supporting his pro-Israel position.
In 2014 Elder published over 40 articles , writing that the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) teaches Antisemitism and supports Holocaust denial.
Besides original articles, the blog is known for its cartoons (including one placed in a Forbes article), posters (including the "Apartheid?" series, which has been used on many campuses), and videos (including a tour of the Belz Great Synagogue in Jerusalem, and an English walking tour of the Temple Mount in Jerusalem).
Press
According to the The Jewish Journal of Greater Los Angeles the blog "serves as a watchdog against anti-Zionism."
The American Zionist Movement has described Elder as "perhaps the most quoted blogger in the area of Middle East politics". The blog has a high rank on Technorati.
The blog has been widely cited by many news organizations, including James Taranto of the Wall Street Journal, Israel HaYom, the Washington Times, and Tablet Magazine.
The blog has been mentioned on CNN, Fox News, the New York Times, and elsewhere. Blog posts have been cross-published in Algemeiner Journal and Jewish Press.
In April 2013 the blog published a scoop revealing that writers for MIFTAH, a nonprofit founded in 1998 by Palestinian leader Hanan Ashrawi were repeating a centuries-old smear over the Passover holiday on their Arabic Web site, accusing Jews of using Christian blood to prepare the Passover matzoh, causing Algemeiner Journal to name the blog as one of its Jewish 100.
On September 13, 2013 The Jerusalem Report published the article Battle of the Bloggers, which called Elder of Ziyon "perhaps the most influential" pro-Israel blog.
Mondoweiss analysed one article on the blog and concluded that "EOZ (=Elder of Ziyon-blogger) is either grossly negligent or willfully malicious—or a combination of the two."
