Katie Leung

Katie Liu Leung (simplified Chinese: 梁佩诗; traditional Chinese: 梁佩詩; pinyin: Liáng Pèishī, born August 8, 1987) is a Scottish actress who plays the character of Cho Chang, Harry Potter's love interest in Books 3, 4 and 5 (only movies 4 and 5), in the film version of the J. K. Rowling novel, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, released in theatres on 18 November 2005.

Biography

Leung was born in Motherwell, Scotland, to Chinese parents. Her parents are divorced and she currently resides in a £400,000 house in an exclusive district of Motherwell with her father, Peter Leung (a native of Hong Kong), two brothers (one named Jonathan) and a younger sister, Violet. Her father owns a successful restaurant and a fast food business in Motherwell and Leung attended Hamilton College, a prestigious Scottish private school in Glasgow.

Leung's father saw an advertisement for a casting call and suggested she try out. Leung objected when she saw the length of the line at the casting auditions. She waited for a total of four hours before she got in. Her audition only took five minutes and she heard nothing further for two weeks, she was then called for a workshop and thereafter got the part of Cho Chang.

She was selected for the role of Cho Chang after beating 3972 other girls, including Courtney Webb, in an open call audition in London for girls of East Asian appearance. She claimed in an interview with the Daily Record that her Scottish accent gave her an edge in the casting room by making her stand out.

Daniel Radcliffe, the actor playing Harry Potter, noted that he found Leung to be "awesome" and a "really amazing actress." Currently, Leung is set to act in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, for which she has delayed plans to go to art college and study at university.
