Mark Baguley (born 21 May 1987) is a professional Australian rules footballer, currently playing with the Essendon Football Club in the Australian Football League.
Early life
Baguley played local footy with Langwarrin before joining Frankston in 2009 as a 21 year old. He played there for three seasons, coming second in their best and fairest in 2011. He was recruited as a mature-age rookie by Essendon with pick #47 in the 2012 Rookie Draft.
AFL career
In July 2012 he was elevated to the senior list. He debuted in Round 16, 2012, against Port Adelaide at Football Park.
Baguley had a breakout season in 2013, playing 21 games and holding down a spot in the defence. Hard at it and with the discipline to stick to his task, he shut down several of the competitions best small forwards. His season was rewarded when he was named the most improved player at the club. He showed further improved, and built on his form early in the 2014 season.
Now a lockdown defender not flashy but does his job most weeks without any fuss, often shutting down the opposition’s most dangerous small forward. The 27-year-old, who played his 50th game in the club’s elimination final defeat to North Melbourne, established himself as a critical member of the Bombers’ defensive group.
