CSI: Cyber (Crime Scene Investigation: Cyber) is an American police procedural drama television series that premiered on March 4, 2015, on CBS during the 2014–15 network television schedule. The series is the third direct spin–off of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and the fourth series in the CSI franchise.

On May 11, 2015, CBS renewed CSI: Cyber for a second season.

Plot

The FBI's team of cyber crime investigators, headed by FBI Special Agent Avery Ryan (Patricia Arquette), works to solve cases involving the dark net and deep web. Avery, an esteemed Ph.D. behavioral psychologist-turned-cyber shrink, is in charge of the Cyber Crime Division at FBI Quantico. The team she leads, which also includes single-father and former U.S. Marine Senior Special Agent Elijah Mundo, hacking savant Daniel Krumitz, ex-black-hat-hackers Raven Ramirez and Brody Nelson, and Deputy Director Simon Sifter, is tasked with solving Internet-related murders, cyber-theft, hacking, sex offences, blackmail, and any other crime deemed to be cyber-related within the FBI's jurisdiction.

Production

Concept and development

On February 18, 2014, CBS announced plans to launch a new spin-off of the franchise titled CSI: Cyber. A backdoor pilot episode aired on April 30 as a season 14 episode of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. The new show's executive producers are Carol Mendelsohn, Anthony E. Zuiker and Ann Donahue; it is inspired by producer Mary Aiken's previous work as a cyber-psychologist.

CBS officially picked up the series on May 10, 2014.

Music

The music composers are Ben Decter and Jeff Russo. The series theme song is "I Can See for Miles" by The Who.

Broadcast

The series has been sold to Channel 5 in the United Kingdom, CTV in Canada, Rai 2 in Italy, Network Ten in Australia, Prime in New Zealand, and AXN in Asia and Latin America.

• Dr. Avery Ryan, Ph.D. (Patricia Arquette) was a renowned Psychological practitioner in New York City when her patient database was hacked. She lost the loyalty of her clients (one of whom was murdered), and eventually her practice; as the series begins, the crime remains unsolved. Ryan joined the FBI's Cyber Division to ensure nothing like that could happen to anybody else. Now a Special Agent in Charge out of Quantico, Ryan travels nation-wide in search of the criminals who live in the dark net, all whilst plotting ways to catch the man who destroyed her life. She is fiercely loyal to her team and heads a "hack-for-good" program, employing cyber-criminals in lieu of prison sentencing.

• Elijah Mundo (James Van Der Beek) is a recently divorced father and former U.S. Marine. As Avery's second in command, Mundo is an expert in battlefield forensics, weaponry, vehicles and bombs. An avid gamer, he is all-but-too-aware of the dangers that lurk in the dark net.

• Simon Sifter (Peter MacNicol) is an FBI Assistant Deputy Director assigned to oversee Ryan's Cyber Division. A career Special Agent, Sifter worked his way up through the ranks investigating homicides, drive-bys and gang warfare. Now facing a new breed of criminal, he acts as the clearing house between FBI Cyber and other branches of the FBI and the government. He is tough, fair and knows how to play politics.

• Brody Nelson (Shad Moss), known as "Babyface" to the team, is a former black hat hacker who was caught and later recruited by FBI Cyber as part of Ryan's "hack-for-good" program.

• Daniel Krumitz (Charley Koontz), referred to by his nickname "Krum", is an FBI Special Agent who Avery claims is the best white hat hacker in the world. He is a brutally honest, quick-witted introvert who specialises in the technical.

• Raven Ramirez (Hayley Kiyoko) is a black-hat hacker turned FBI analyst as part of Ryan's "hack-for-good" program. After two years at FBI Cyber, she has become a specialist in social media investigations, international relations and cyber trends.

• David Ortega (Michael Irby) is a Medical Examiner stationed out of Washington who often assists the Cyber team. He is a Navy Captain.

• Nick Dalton (Luke Perry) is a retired FBI special agent who has recently joined the private sector. He was forced to leave the FBI after a classified falling out with Ryan and her team.

• Francine Krumitz (Angela Trimbur) is Daniel's sister; she is adamant that he needs to leave the death of their parents firmly in the past.

• Aaron Sifter (Nathan Gamble) is Simon's son.

• Michelle "Mitchie" Mundo (McKenna Grace) is Elijah's daughter.

• Devon Atwood (Alexie Gilmore) is Elijah's ex-wife.

Reception

The first season of CSI: Cyber has received mixed reviews. On Rotten Tomatoes, the season has a rating of 35%, based on 31 reviews, with an average rating of 5.1/10. The site's critical consensus reads, "While stocked with impressive talent, CSI: Cyber fails to add anything truly new to the franchise, settling for a slightly modernized twist on the same typical crimefighting scenarios." On Metacritic, the season has a score of 45 out of 100, based on 23 critics, indicating "mixed or average reviews".
