Dependent Territoris table

Regarding your edit summary in removing the Dependant territories table, I will say I was only "editing along" as someone else had already added it without a proper consensus. I think it's mentioned in the bottom catagory on the talk page discussing whether or not the dependent territories should be included. The C of E. God Save The Queen! Governors general

Per my edits at List of elected or appointed female heads of state: I don't know about other Commonwealth realms with a governor general, but the Prime Minister of Canada not long ago stated that the monarch of Canada is head of state, not the governor general (I left a link regarding this at the article's talk page; there's more information available). Admittedly, there are some in the country who argue the governor general is indeed the head of state, but theirs obviously goes against the official government opinion. Even absent that edict from the prime minister's office, I question the practice of presenting one side of an argument as though it is the correct one; for instance, there is a debate in Australia over who is head of state: the Queen or the governor general. Perhaps something needs to be done at List of elected or appointed female heads of state to accommodate these unique cases. --Ħ MIESIANIACAL 00:33, 28 June 2010 (UTC)

Deputy Leader of Labour

I'm a little mystified about this right now. Is Harriet Harman simultaneously Acting Leader, Deputy Leader and Party Chair right now (if so, that seems ridiculous as her husband is Party Treasurer too)? Or is Jack Straw Acting Deputy Leader? I'm wondering this because I just found out about his Shadow Cabinet post of "Acting Shadow Deputy Prime Minister" which places him directly under Harman here and seems to be the same as calling him "Acting Deputy Leader of the Opposition" or William Hague's "Senior Member". If Harman remains Deputy Leader as of now, does that mean she'll retain this after the leadership election later this month or will she have to renew her mandate too? I am not sure. Jack Straw's title of "Acting Shadow Deputy Prime Minister" may just be an indication that he is shadowing Nick Clegg and perhaps has no bearing on his status in the Labour party. As a comparison the people shadowing Prescott (DPM & FSoS) and Mandelson (FSoS) weren't automatically the second most senior people in the Conservative party. Straw would be the obvious choice for shadowing Clegg's constitutional reform brief as that was part of his Justice Minister portfolio.

I am unclear about the Labour party rules for leadership elections. There are some sources online that say Harman is planning to stay on as Deputy Leader once the new leader is appointed, but an election could be forced if enough MPs want to rock the boat by nominating an opponent. I don't think you can say Hague was his predecessor as Hague was never Shadow DPM. There is also not normally a "deputy leader of the opposition" (and as far as I know there never has been) so there is no succession between "possible 2nd in command of the Labour Party in opposition" and "semi-official 2nd in command of the Conservative party in opposition". But weren't Prescott and Mandelson's only shadows for their ETR and business briefs (respectively)? Another thing that makes me think that Straw's deputy-ship is more than just because of his judicial/constitutional expertise is that he isn't the outright Shadow Deputy Prime Minister like the other opposition ministers but the Acting Shadow Deputy Prime Minister. The problem is that the source simply lists a title and we have to speculate the motivations behind that title. For example we could speculate that the Conservative's "Shadow secretary for the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister" title was an attempt to show who was shadowing Prescott while still distancing the party from the attitude of the public to a DPM role at that time. You may agree or disagree with my speculation, but we could never include it in the articles as it is my personal analysis of source material.

If we have a source that says Straw is the current official or unofficial deputy leader of the Labour Party then we could repeat that statement. We can't take a title (however intriguingly phrased) and draw a conclusion from it without supporting context. Road Wizard (talk) 18:08, 2 July 2010 (UTC)

I've just got off the phone with the party's headquarters and was told that Straw is indeed Harman's acting deputy until she resumes her role as deputy leader after the leadership election. Is this official enough for me to insert this information on the relevant pages? Or is it possible to exude something more official from them? The user who constantly deletes head of state from the infobox continues to revert, even after my last comment on the talk page. I think what is going on there is extremely unproductive. Str deletes "head of state", some other person once again inserts "president", it gets deleted. It has been going on like this for a month in an endless cycle, due to Str's lack of cooperativeness. What do you mean, "now Latvia"? Riga was the capital of Latvia also in 1971. Latvia was one of the 15 constituent republics (albeit occupied according to the international law) in the Soviet Union, so defined by the Soviet constitution. Even in the Soviet era, place of birth, death, etc., was defined by the republic. Analogy: politicians in the EU are identified by their respective countries, I have never seen one identified as born in Berlin/London/Amsterdam, the EU.

This is the English language Misplaced Pages, and no English speaking countries ever recognized Latvia as part of the Soviet Union. Neither did any other European countries, except Sweden. For English speaking Wikipedians this should be enough to establish Latvian primacy over the Soviet one. Another analogy: Lech Wałęsa was born in a German occupied village called Popowo, then technically (according to the contemporary German law) part of the Third Reich. Why then is Walesa's country of birth in Misplaced Pages listed as Poland? Kingdom of the Netherlands

Please stop deleting the three Ministers Plenipotentiary from the Kingdom of the Netherlands infobox. They are a vital part of the Kingdom government and are actually the persons that distinguish the Kingdom of the Netherlands from the Netherlands. Furthermore, the title of the Prime Minister when acting in Kingdom capacity is Chairman of the Council of Minister of the Kingdom (Voorzitter van de Rijksministerraad). Mark Rutte can be included on the article Netherlands, but I think we should wait until he is sworn in to include him on Kingdom of the Netherlands. West Virginia Governor

So according to West Virginia law, the Senate President is next in line to succeed the Governor should anything happen to the latter. There is no formal Office of the Lieutenant Governor, however, the Senate President is entitled to use the title of Lieutenant Governor (oddly). As Tomblin, as Senate President has assumed office as Governor and seems to have the full powers of the office, the Speaker of the House of Delegates (a Richard Thompson) is next in line. I'm mystified about whether Tomblin is to serve out the rest of Manchin's term or if a special election is to be held in order for Tomblin to return to his work as Senate President. He may legally be the full Governor, but may still plan on being an Acting Governor.

But then there's this weird thing that says "I will spend my time as Governor running the executive branch of government. I do not plan on presiding over or voting in the Senate. Our Senate rules contemplate that when the Senate President is unavailable, the President Pro Tempore presides over the senate." So I dunno if he's still Senate President or not! Re. List of Spells in Harry Potter.

In the movie 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part One' Hermione definitely pronounces "Obliviate" on her parents. We see her image fade from photos, which matches the effects described for the <Obliteration> charm. Also, the wiki-article on Hermione states that she laid a "memory charm" on her parents, convincing them that they were someones else and have a life-long ambition to relocate to Australia.

Is it within reach that you're explaining your revert at some point in the near future? Otherwise, I'll restore my version. Also, I might as well list my "precedents": German president Horst Köhler resigned on 31 May 2010, but his successor Christian Wulff did not take office until 30 June. Still, we don't list Norbert Lammert as "acting president" (although he technically was). Another example: William Rehnquist died on 3 September 2005, his successor John Roberts wasn't confirmed until 29 September. Betweens those date, the oldest justice (Stevens) was technically the "interim" chief justice. The "since" came about because I changed it as a result of a comment at Misplaced Pages:Featured article candidates/Elizabeth II/archive1. I agreed with the reviewer that "since 1952" or "1952 to date" or "1952 onwards" looked better than a dash between a date and a word. But it's only an "I like it" kind of preference. Hi, I noticed that you once again removed the order of office field from the infobox on the Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. I added a section on the talk page back in 2010 regarding this and asked in my last edit summary that users discuss any edits to that field before changing it. That's not quite correct, as there is no official title of Minister in the Swiss government, even if they are referred to as ministers in media shorthand. Federal Judges

I have noticed that on Federal Judge articles, in the infobox section, you have been e9changing the fields from appointer to nominator and changing6rerrer the target article from "List of federal judges appointed by President so & so" to "President so & so". It would only be correct to use the "nominator" field while the judge is awaiting the advice and consent of the Senate. However, once the Senate grants advice and consent, the President "appoints" the individual to office, thus "appointer" is the correct field to use for federal judges that have actually taken office. This is the usage that prevails among federal judicial articles and there is no reason at all to change it. There does not seem to be any reason to change the target link from the "list of judges appointed by" to the main Presidential articles. I would also point out that the very fact that we have articles entitled "List of federal judges appointed by Barack Obama" is primae facie evidence that "appointer" is the correct term. For now Mihai Răzvan Ungureanu does not hold any office. The laws, customs and context in Romania make him just a citizen with a task from the President. Unlike Spain, in Romania the President nominates a candidate and then the Parliament approves the cabinet he proposes or not. If he (the candidate) passes that vote, he then goes to the Presidential Palace, together with the Cabinet, and takes the oath of office. That might or might not happen tomorrow. Bernie Machen et al

I have reverted your recent edits to the Bernie Machen article. Rather than continuing a slow-motion edit-war, I thought I would drop by your talk page and explain. You may or may not be aware that there are Misplaced Pages biographies for all 16 men who have served as president of the University of Florida, and those articles are consistently written, ordered and formatted, including the following:

1. Use of Infobox Person rather than any other infobox(es).

2. All of the three-man before-and-after succession boxes were previously deleted. Instead, the articles utilize a much cleaner navbox that covers the entire 16-man succession, including full names and dates of service. This was also done consistently for the FSU, UCF and USF presidential successions, which overlap with the UF presidential succession.

3. Every article employs consistent internal spacing as permitted by WP:MOS.

4. The correct order of the standard end-of-article sections, per WP:MOS, is: (a) "See also"; (b) "References"; (c) "Bibliography"; and (d) "External links." Each of the 16 articles follows the standard section order per MOS.

Four of the 16 UF presidential articles have already undergone Good Article review and have achieved GA status. Another six are in the works, with the Sledd and Tigert article upgrades already in the works for Feature Article status. There is also a "list of" article regarding the 16 presidents that is linked in the "See also" sections and the UF president navbox. The substantive content of the Machen article, being the current and therefore most controversial subject in the sense of random IP users wanting to make random and often inappropriate additions, is a work in progress. Rather than attempting to reformat the Machen article to your personal preferences (and inconsistently with the other 15 articles and MOS), I would ask that you focus on editing the substance of the Machen article, which clearly needs work. Governor articles infoboxes

Just some questions. I see you have been updating a lot of the governor info and succession boxes. I guess for cleanup. But I just was wondering why you felt the need to take out the birthname parameter from the infoboxes? Changing it to just name as you have done causes some of the infobox titles to be wrong. I can understand adding the name field, but please leave the birthname field in because it is a valid field that is used lower down in the infobox. It tends to be more important with female officeholders, I suppose, but wouldn't hurt to have it for male officeholders to list their full birth name, instead of just their commonly known name. Also, I thought infoboxes especially should have the URLs written out, not just shortened to "Official website". I'm pretty sure it is a very tiny difference in style and like you said it is redundant, but in my humble opinion other South Korean presidents' infobox show they were born in the Empire of Japan (or Japanese Korea) explicitly. Please find the Kim_Dae-jung and Park Chung-hee. Or is Lee's case different from others since he was born in Osaka?

You're a very experienced editor, and I respect your decision to remove the words in question. Mexico's election

Hello. I'm not sure if you are aware of the Mexican law on elections. The Federal Electoral Institute (IFE) will declare a winner after the district recount and after declaring the election a valid one. After this, the IFE gives the winner a "constancia de mayoría" the official document that entitles somebody as the president-elect.

Right now, there is no "president-elect" in Mexico. The electoral process is still going on. Mexican press refer to appearing leading candidate Enrique Peña as "the virtual president-elect", because of the above reasons. AlexCovarrubias 00:20, 4 July 2012 (UTC)

Why?

Hi there. I was visiting the article on Rob McKenna, and saw that the order of office was missing from the infobox, in contrast to a version I read a few weeks prior. In trying to find out who made the change and to understand the reasoning behind it, I noticed you've made that same change to many other articles too numerous to list. I won't claim to be an overly active editor, but I do try and keep up with agreed changes to infoboxes, and I haven't been able to find any community agreement saying that we should start not using the order of office in infoboxes where applicable. Succession boxes for judicial nominees

Thank you for your efforts to improve articles concerning various public officials, including nominees for judicial positions. However, I do not believe it is customary to include succession boxes in the articles for individuals who are currently nominated for a judicial position, but have not yet been confirmed for the position. Including these boxes could inadvertently create the misleading impression that these individuals are currently serving, which is especially concerning given that we all know that not all nominees are eventually confirmed. I actually was coming here to make a similar comment, so I will include it under the previous user's comment. In particular, relating to William L. Thomas and some other federal judge articles, you added lines to the infobox regarding succession, etc., that are not applicable at this time as this individual and the other individuals have NOT been confirmed by the Senate. I have made the appropriate correction to the William L. Thomas article and will correct the others. But you may want to double check in the future as to whether the individuals in question are merely "nominated and pending before the Senate" or have actually been "confirmed" by the Senate. Thanks. Co-Princes of Andorra

Hi, I just noted your changes in Josep Maria Mauri. Some thoughts: the two coprinces of Andorra are referred to as the "episcopal coprince" (i.e. Bishop of Urgell) and the "french coprince" (i.e. President of France) - see for example both of their websites. Therefore to call the personal representative of the Bishop of Urgell in his function as head of state of Andorra as "Spanish representative of Andorra" seems to me misleading. Furthermore, he is not representing Andorra but the Co-Prince. I changed the wording to: "Representativ of the Episcopal Co-Prince of Andorra". I hope you don't mind. Website in infobox

Where a website is listed in an infobox, such as klobuchar.senate.gov, the actual name of the website should be displayed (this, not the link, is the point of including it in the infobox in the first place. As you're aware, I disagree with your formatting of politicians infoboxes to ween out information I find essential to their articles. On Antonio Villaraigosa's, you claimed: "His wife and child aren't major parts of his political life nor is his residence permanent or relevant to it" as the rationale for deleting information. I feel I should tell you that these aren't just politicians, they're people, and their personal lives are in conjunction with their political ones. Well it's understandable not wanting the infobox to be overfilled with info. As for the family, spouses and children have around as much impact on decisions as religion, so why include that? And for politicians, most of them are married and have kids, so it would do well to include this info either for all, or just the few that are divorced or single. And as for the "alma mater" section, I believe it's essential to display what degree(s) they earned, as alma mater is just what schools were attended, and could confuse readers. Follow-up

Hey again. I'm sure you saw my post earlier entitled 'Why?'. I posted it coming up to two months ago, and when a response wasn't forthcoming, I added a reminder. I presumed you lead a busy life, which is why I allowed such a long amount of time for you to respond to a concern that your edits weren't following established consensus. However, I feel I have given enough time for a response, and I am disappointed you failed to give it. In order to try to understand your lack of explanation for edits were are seemingly against what the community agreed to on the format of infoboxes, I explored some of your edits and talk page. In some ways, maybe a discussion between us two was never going to resolve this, as it is clear concerns have been raised with your infobox edits for sometime now, and I doubt that could have been solved through the interaction of two people. So, what now? As I see it, you have been making comprehensive changes to the infoboxes of various articles; changes which in part have elicited concerns from other editors for a period of years, such as the removal of the order of office, for which you have received no consensus to do. I did not join Misplaced Pages to police other editors, but considering the scope (covering numerous articles) and the length of time you have been doing it despite concerns raised, I feel I have to report all this to a admin so s/he may look over this situation. I shall leave you a link to the relevant admin when I'm done. As for me, I feel this is unambigiously a case of you editing without concensus, so if I see you have made such comprehensive changes to an infobox elsewhere, I shall restore it back to its approved format. I'm pretty active over at Misplaced Pages in Spanish and yesterday I reverted an edit by an IP that claimed the guy was dead but providing a reference that I was unable to translate using Google. So I came over here to see if I could get any further info., but found the same claim, this time unreferenced, and which I removed. The other WPs I've checked make no mention of his death. I have been unable to find any news anywhere on this matter in the English/Spanish language press and as this is a potentially serious BLP issue, I would appreciate any pointers. I notice that at several articles on Nebraska politicians, you've repeatedly changed University of Nebraska-Lincoln to University of Nebraska, Lincoln. Although a Google search indicates that both versions are in use, the former is almost always used in Nebraska. It's used by the school itself and by the student newspaper; it's also the version used by Nebraska's two largest newspapers, the Omaha World-Herald and the Lincoln Journal Star. A search of the New York Times website for ("university of nebraska lincoln"), which should capture both versions, shows an occasional story in which the comma version is used, but the great preponderance of hits show the dashed version; it also appears to be the form used by Reuters. Misplaced Pages's own article uses the dash rather than the comma in its title. Although a Google search for ("university of nebraska lincoln") indicates that respectable sources use the comma'd version, the dashed version appears to predominate; I'd suggest that we use it, absent compelling grounds for doing otherwise. see WP:MOS-ZH; this is required for certain browsers to properly select fonts
). 2) Changing birthplace fields from what is often previously "PLACE, PROVINCE" to "PLACE, CHINA", when not one CCP leader is not Chinese-born, and "PLACE" by itself is often ambiguous, and moreover, vague in such a large land. You would not dare to do the same for, for example, Portland, Oregon and Portland, Maine, would you? Be more careful, lest future such edits begin to verge on intentional disruption. It's in anticipation of the event, which may very well end up with an Abbott caretaker government but it seems less likely, judging by the news sources. I'm keeping them hidden because, obviously, it's not a confirmed thing and would violate WP:CRYSTAL but by having it there at all, it helps preclude people from doing just that (replacing Gillard with Rudd and so on). Hassanal Bolkiah note on Heads of state list

I saw you reverted my note on the Sultan of Brunei pointing out that he has been Sultan since 1967. The reason I put that note up was to avoid a potential reader thinking Hassanal came to the throne in 1984, but rather that 1 January 1984 saw only a change in Brunei's status. I'm perfectly up for having something like an RFC on this, but we're not going to resolve this if you're not even going to bother answering. Please provide your basis for indicating Zeidan's term as Prime Minister has ended. Being kidnapped disables someone from carrying out Prime Minister duties, but it doesn't make someone not Prime Minister. When a U.S. president, for example, is incapacitated, the Vice President becomes Acting President, not President. In the U.S. we have a constitutional basis for carrying out succession.
