Photographing every municipality
Several of us are engaged in a project to make sure that every municipality in the state has a photo in its article. That's one photo for every city, borough, town, and township. We'll probably leave census-designated places and unincorporated communities for next year.
There are 2562 municipalities in the state, which is likely the largest for any US state. So far we have about 1,869 of them photographed, with about 700 left to go. You can see what photos are needed, divided by county at User:Nyttend/Pennsylvania
You can also see the entire list at List of municipalities in Pennsylvania. Please take photos and upload them, first to the article for the municipality and then to the list article. We'd like to be finished with this project by July 4th, 2015.
What should you take photos of?
If you live in the area, you probably know better than we do what's the most important or most beautiful part of the municipality. But just in case you need a few ideas, try these subjects.
- the town hall
- railroad station
- fire station or police station
- a building on the National Register of Historic Places
- a school or library
- a bridge
- a church
- a park, perhaps with a Civil War monument
- the corner of State and Main Streets
- the most beautiful building in town
- the tallest building in town
When uploading the files to Commons, please include a category for the name of the municipality, or if no such category exists, the name of the county.

- Of course, street scenes are very often helpful in a community, or open countryside in a rural area; see the photos in Scottdale, Pennsylvania and Mifflin Township, Columbia County, Pennsylvania for some decent examples. Nyttend (talk) 02:41, 12 May 2015 (UTC)
- I really like this project and wish I had more time to contribute to it. I haven't been very active the last few years and have lost track of some of the tools. Is their an easy to use Flickr upload bot? I used to use one regularly, but I think it's now dead. Flickr user Nicholas T is an amazing photographer who licenses his work under a wiki friendly license. I have uploaded many of his photos in the past. Gerry D (talk) 22:14, 12 May 2015 (UTC)
We've got about 5 photographers working on this already: 1 in western, PA, about 3 in SE PA, and 1 in NE PA. It looks like we need some folks in Central PA! There should be a "watchlist banner" running during June for all registered editors with a PA located IP. If you have any questions, just ask. Smallbones(smalltalk) 04:05, 1 June 2015 (UTC)
I can do most of the remaining Venango places. Perhaps others when I travel.

- This is great. I'll take some photos today! And how is this project "believed to be semi-active?" auntieruth (talk) 18:47, 2 June 2015 (UTC)

- 3.) Contribute to an LGBT-related task force at another Wikimedia project (Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons, Wikivoyage, etc.)
Or, view or update the current list of Tasks. This campaign is supported by the Wikimedia LGBT+ User Group, an officially recognized affiliate of the Wikimedia Foundation. Remember, Wiki Loves Pride is about creating and improving LGBT-related content at Wikimedia projects, and content should have a neutral point of view. One does not need to identify as LGBT or any other gender or sexual minority to participate. This campaign is about adding accurate, reliable information to Misplaced Pages, plain and simple, and all are welcome!
If you have any questions, please leave a message on the campaign's main talk page.
Thanks, and happy editing!
