Statement of gender
I've just made an edit on Ice Hockey World Championships denoting that it is a men's tournament – a simple and obvious distinction which had not been made explicit before. Having a cursory glance, our articles on Major League Baseball and the National Football League do not make this distinction either. Even Premier League (a featured article) fails to tell the reader the exclusive gender of its participants.
Such presentations (presumably unintentional ones made by male editors) serve only to (a) underline the bias of sporting culture in favour of men and (b) perpetuate the underlying idea that there is "sport" and "women's sport". While improving Misplaced Pages's coverage of women's sport is the foremost purpose of this project, we should also try to counteract these notions in articles on men's sport. In Synchronized swimming—a principally female sport—half the lead is dedicated to covering the position of men in the sport. Yet, it goes unspoken that women are excluded in the three above articles (and i assume many more) – a fact which by its very omission says that this exclusion is not important. If the exclusion were done by any other means rather than gender (race, culture etc), we would doubtless give this aspect much attention. SFB 20:53, 11 January 2012 (UTC)
- The articles don't make the distinction in your examples because they allow women to play. Just no women have managed to attain the level required to play at that high a level. You need to be careful when making such changes as saying its a men's league when there are no rules barring women is inaccurate. -DJSasso (talk) 21:08, 11 January 2012 (UTC)
- This is a frequent kind of error actually. What often happens is that amateur and pro leagues and their scholastic counterparts are generally set up to discourage or ignore attempts at female participation, resulting in no girls/women with the skills to compete at higher levels. As this has been written about many times in reliable sources, some kind of overall article on discrimination and women's sport would be useful, and could be linked to from articles like the one Sillyfolkboy mentions. There's a lot of info available from old newspapers that clearly shows this sort of bias going back to the 1800s, and I've seen various modern pieces on the topic as well; i.e., it's not only a current concern but has a rich history. I think this would be about 1000% more encyclopedically productive than either trying to add usually untrue allegations that particular professional leagues are sexist (rather than everything leading up to them) or creating article after article after article that consists of little but examples of such segregation on a local, per-sport basis, as has been done in Category:Women's sport in Australia. Most of those articles needs to merge, though I'm declining to participate in them any further due to conflicts with their principal author becoming too irritating. The content of this sort gathered so far would be best used in a wider and less parochial piece about the undeniable stunting of women's participation in sports. And a Women's sport in Australia article could, per WP:SUMMARY style, be more encyclopedic than a bunch of hopeless micro-stubs like Women's archery in Australia, Women's boxing in Australia, etc. Some of the sport-specific articles do report on notable, organized sporting as in Women's golf in Australia. But not every single recognizable sport needs a separate "Women's in " content fork, only those where cultural context generates a distinctive phenomenon of note. - The qualification criteria are a bit of a smokescreen to be honest. Even if women are technically allowed to participate, the fact that these competitions go on with just one gender in reality is enough to make a statement saying as such in the article. Leaving discrimination issues aside, it's an encyclopaedic failing not to mention gender at all when gender is a defining aspect of a competition. SFB 18:57, 11 June 2012 (UTC)

Quite a few " men's" pages in WMNSPORT
I have noticed quite a few pages with " men's" in the title have been added to WP:WMNSPORT by the bot User:LauraHale requested. I have suggested a review on the bot's page and mentioned it on her talk page.
I understand some of these may be correctly targeted because they discuss women's sport as well as men's, but I think most of them are due to the categories listed for the bot to process weren't completely female entries. Mark Hurd (talk) 10:43, 24 February 2012 (UTC)

Task Force on women's basketball
I'm gathering feedback for the possibility of starting a Task Force on women's basketball, with the intent that it would be a task force of WikiProject Women's sport as well as WikiProject Basketball (and maybe college basketball). I've read Misplaced Pages:WikiProject_Council/Guide/Task_forces#Setting_up_a_task_force_structure, but I did not see whether one is supposed to get permission from the Wikiproject to form a task force, or if one should be bold and just do it. I posting this as a third way - if someone identifies that I am required to get permission, I'll start that process, if I do not hear back soon, I'll be bold.--SPhilbrick(Talk) 14:19, 26 July 2013 (UTC)
- At WP:FOOTBALL they usually ask that at least five editors are involved to start a taskforce. I'm not sure if this is a requirement or a sort of rule of thumb. I suppose if you started things off with fewer than about five editors you might get some resistance. Although, in my experience the response from the 'parent project' (WP:FOOTBALL) to the women's football taskforce has been to completely ignore it! Only breaking out into open hostility now and again. I wish you well with your endeavour - being a task force of two separate wikiprojects is a very interesting idea. Is this possible? 3rd party eyes needed
We have a WP:FULLNAME related problem regarding the article first mention name of a Serbian tennis player. This is the last twist in a long pattern of "controversy" between advocates of national spellings and "Tennis names" which started with an attempt to remove ć from the players name in 2009 at Talk:Ana Ivanovic/Archive 4. That was rejected 13 vs 5, but inexplicably a RM in 2012 years later went 0-4 in the other direction, and there's been 2 unsuccessful attempts to undo that since. Anyway, that's background, this isn't about the title it's about the first sentence, the lead WP:FULLNAME part of the a MOSBIO guidelines.
All other Serbian tennis players Tamara Čurović, Jelena Genčić, Jovana Jakšić, Jelena Janković, Tatjana Ječmenica, Ana Jovanović, Karolina Jovanović, Natalija Kostić, Aleksandra Krunić, Vojislava Lukić, Teodora Mirčić, Sandra Načuk, Milana Špremo, Ana Timotić, Ana Veselinović, Dragana Zarić, Nataša Zorić have WP:FULLNAME in line with WP:OPENPARA, similar to the draft guideline at WP:SERBIANNAMES.
Ana Jovanović (Cyrillic: Ана Јовановић; born 28 December 1984) is a Serbian professional tennis player.
That excludes obviously former-Serbians, Australian Serbians, who follow a similar pattern to American citizens:
Martina Navratilova (Czech: Martina Navrátilová; born Martina Šubertová; October 18, 1956) is a retired Czech American tennis player and coach.
The extra spelling in Cyrillic is unique to Serbian and some Bosnian articles. In Serbia Latinica (Latin script) is only used by the popular media, tabloids, sports press etc., while government newspapers, the church continue to use Cyrillic, so every Serbian has to read and write both. The Serbian is absent from Croatian WP:FULLNAME.
Ivana Abramović (born September 3, 1983 in Zagreb) is a Croatian professional tennis player.
So the problem, the problem is the lead of Ana Ivanovic which was given duplicate names in this edit immediately following the move creating the lead
Ana Ivanovic (Serbian: Ana Ivanović Serbian Cyrillic: Ана Ивановић, born November 6, 1987) is a Serbian tennis player...
This is contrary to WP:FULLNAME. The RM didn't make any case for changing the lead, nor through going through the article and stripping out 157 more -ć, leaving the only -ć in brackets in the lead sentence. Also in my experience (if anyone knows different please give an example) we only ever do Martina Navratilova (Czech: Martina Navrátilová) type leads if someone has very clearly changed citizenship, not even green-card Dominican baseball players in the US have their Spanish accents removed in WP:FULLNAME.
At this point this is highly sensitized, by mentioning it here I'm leaving poop on WikiProject Women's sport's doorstep. But then there is a WikiProject Women's sport tag on the Talk page and this article "belongs" to WikiProject Women's sport as much as WikiProject Serbia and WikiProject Tennis. So there it is. I hope that the publicity surrounding the current Ashes series will encourage more editing in this field, but I mention it here in case anyone on this project feels capable of bringing these articles up to scratch. My name is Adi Khajuria and I am helping out with Wikimania 2014 in London.
One of our initiatives is to create leaflets to increase the discoverability of various wikimedia projects, and showcase the breadth of activity within wikimedia. Any kind of project can have a physical paper leaflet designed - for free - as a tool to help recruit new contributors. These leaflets will be printed at Wikimania 2014, and the designs can be re-used in the future at other events and locations.
This is particularly aimed at highlighting less discoverable but successful projects, e.g:

Fort Worth Panthers
This is a women's soccer team in the Women's Premier Soccer League. That article has a red link: Fort Worth Panthers (WPSL). Fort Worth Panthers redirects to Fort Worth Cats (Texas League), which is about a defunct minor league baseball team, the Fort Worth Cats, which once used that name. Fort Worth FC might be a club of some sort, but it's certainly not the team's name, although the article claims that. Can you fix that? 71.23.178.214 (talk) 16:11, 8 September 2014 (UTC)
Heather Clark pro Ice Hockey player?
Does anyone have any information about Heather Clark (fighter) or Heather Jo Clark apparently before she became an MMA fighter she played pro Ice hockey. If so does anyone know the name of the team she played for and for how long so I can create an article. Apparently she may have played for EHC Visp and Vancouver Griffins can anyone confirm this? Comment on the WikiProject X proposal
Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Misplaced Pages struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Notice and invitation
- There is a redirect discussion that may be of interest to this group.
- Have you heard of the Kaffeeklatsch? It is a test area for women to hear and support each other. The idea came about as a result of a discussion at meta regarding my IdeaLab proposal (yet open) for WikiProject Women.
- Now that the klatsch has survived an MfD and WMF legal has said that it does not violate the non discrimination policy, I am looking for women editors who might like to join.
- Although I have started a couple of discussions, they are not urgent. For now, the "Please introduce yourself" discussion is more important! I want to take it slow at first and build a small group before trying to address heavy topics or come up with big goals. For now, the klatsch is there as a sort of refuge. I hope you will consider joining, and invite other women editors, too, if you wish.

Women and The Boat Race
I see that this year there is going to be a women's race as part of "The Boat Races", in 29 days time, but our The Boat Race article only mentions this way down the article under The_Boat_Race#Other_boat_races_involving_Oxford_and_Cambridge. The logo on the official web page now includes an "S" on "RACES", not the version used in the article. I'm no expert on rowing (I just watch the race each year, along with the London Marathon, the Grand National and a bit of The Championships as the totality of my sports tv-watching outside the Olympics). Someone interested in women's sport might like to update the article to reflect this year's changes, the addition of the women's race. PamD 09:25, 13 March 2015 (UTC)

- Hi Pam, just to reply to your post here, The Rambling Man created the combined The Boat Race 2015, as mentioned above, and several articles on the the individual women's races since 1927 (listed on Template:The Boat Race), Gareth E Kegg created the 1927 article. Andrew Davidson started Women's Boat Race and Women's rowing which I expanded as well as revising Rowing (sport)#Women. So some progress made and hopefully heading in the right direction. Other Women's Boat Races have scant coverage, if you could help with that, brilliant. As for the main article, which is mainly poor, because the men's section covers 175+ years of history, it's little wonder that the women's race gets less coverage. Indeed, until this year, it was literally a minor blip that was viewed by a few, celebrated by a few, and remembered by a few. If you can help, please do. - Hi Pam, just to add - thank you for flagging this. I enjoyed working on it and collaborating with other editors. It wasn't obvious, to me at least, what the right way to solve this was initially, and, as we saw, there was a discussion about moving Talk:The Boat Race#Requested move 13 March 2015, which didn't happen, but following the discussions at the UK Wikipedians' notice board, WikiProject Rowing and User Talk, the pattern of changes described above emerged as a result of this being brought to the attention of editors who had (hopefully) the right ideas about changes to make. I would add that most of the content around the boat races has been generated by The Rambling Man including the initiative to boldly combine the races in the Talk:The Boat Races 2015#Name and create the initial redirect for the Women's Boat Race, so much credit belongs there. But, my reason for mentioning this is I think this is a great example of how the collaborative processes on Misplaced Pages can work to produce improvements. Whizz40 (talk) 05:37, 5 May 2015 (UTC)
