It is the 10th largest 10km run in the world. The 2006 run took place on April 23rd and over 50,000 participants registered, making it the largest 10km run in North America. There is also a 2.5km "mini Sun Run" on the same date, which a further 2000 people, mostly children and their parents, ran in 2006.
The stated mandate of the Sun Run is to "promote health, fitness and community spririt and to support amateur athletics". The run is not a charity event, however the organisers claim over $1.1 million in race proceeds have been donated to charities since 1985.
