Vision for Solar Power
For decades, Punjab has remained a power deficient state which people suffering pangs of erratic power supply hitting farmers and common people alike. There was a need to augment power supply and to supplement the available conventional power with solar power and power from waste. In Bikram Singh Majithia's governance as New and Renewable Energy Minister, Punjab, he invited entrepreneurs from across the country and the NRIs to invest in solar power sector. The result was that in a short span Punjab was able to attract investment worth Rs 4,000 crore in this sector and the solar power generation tipped to go up from a meagre 9 megawatt to 541 megawatt by 2016. The innovation in the idea was to involve farmers in setting up solar power plants on their own land where they could utilise the power so generated for their own needs and sell the surplus power to Punjab State Power Corporation which guaranteed to buy back surplus power under an agreement. The added boost came when financial institutions and banks agreed to provide loans and funds for such projects.
