Sanchez was born in Santiago de Cuba. He became a university professor during the early years of the Cuban Revolution. Since becoming a political activist, Sanchez has been jailed and arrested a number of times for his opposition to the Cuban government. In 1998, Sanchez was nominated to receive a Nobel Peace Prize for his work.
