Population: approximiately 890,000 (2001 census); Literacy: 89% - second highest among Indian States after Kerala.
Tribes
The main tribe is the Mizo, divided into many sub-tribes, namely the Lushei, Ralte, Hmar, Paihte, Pawi (or Poi). They practice a form of Christianity mixed with with many of their original Animism. A small number of them are also Animists. The Chakma, of the Arakanese stock, practice Theravada Buddhism mixed with Hinduism and Animism.
