The motion was passed in Parliament by 77 votes to 13 (all 10 members of the opposition and three nominated MPs).
It was widely misunderstood as a growth target statement and reported as such by the mass media. Several parties opposing the PWP have propagated this misinterpretation despite repeated clarification by government ministers. Some citizens reacted to the PWP with shock and anger, and this has led to the largest public protest ever organized in Singapore's history. One academic has also criticized the PWP as being "overly mechanistic, economically simplistic and astonishingly sociologically and politically naive". The PWP has become one of the largest political issues raised in the 2015 general elections.
