notability guideline proposal

Thanks...

... for the kind words you left on my user page. I also have, for your enjoyment, a pair of userboxes that state I am an atheist and a member of the Anglican church. I understand the spirit of why people are against userboxes (and mine are dwindling), pushing POV and using them to create factions and cliques. I fell in love with them originally however simply because a lot of them just made me laugh, and that's a nice break sometimes. Yes, I'm here primarily to write an encyclopedia, but userpages and their boxes let me know that I am creating with other people not faceless, text editors. Ifnord 02:56, 27 June 2006 (UTC)

BGC

You reinstated content I removed from a user page, stating on my talk page that it had probably been posted by a sock puppet evading a ban. This does not strike me as a good argument for leaving divisive content on a user page. Would you by any chance have more persuasive arguments? AvB ÷ talk 22:20, 28 June 2006 (UTC)

Presidents of Panama

Hello Ziggurat. I just noticed you have left a message on the talk page of the {{PanamaPresidents}}. I think this template is unnecessary so I think it should be replaced by standard succession boxes. I have already replaced it for presidents back to the 1984. Do you share the same opinion? - Darwinek 17:31, 3 July 2006 (UTC)

John Strausbaugh page

Hello,

Thank you for your advice. I did some research and tried to fix the page. Also did a Google search re: importance. I notified Mr. Gustafson who admonished me for telling him what he already knew. Seems a number of people don't like this guy Strausbaugh. I always found his writing to be opinionated, but based on considerable research. I see that you have de-puffed the page. I feel that relevant information has been deleted. I have now checked out numerous author's pages and found them to be far more cluttered and "puffy" than this one ever was--although I do agree that it was a little over the top.

Sincerely,

ITech

Thank you for de-puffing the Strausbaugh page. It now looks like hell, however and the addition of the tag "publicity photo" beneath the portrait is obviously embarrassing. There are countless portraits of living writers on wikipedia that are not marred in this manner. What is the problem here? Do you and Gustafson have a particular issue with Strausbaugh? If so, I would truly like to know what it is. Perhaps it has merit. In any case, the following is copied from Gustafson's page. He deleted my last message requesting that he assign me a different administrator. He has been exceedingly rude and pompous. If you can assign me to another administrator, please have the kindness to do so. If not, please tell me the process. Thank you for your patience. ITech 21:01, 7 July 2006 (UTC)

User talk:Jeffrey O. Gustafson I don't feel like having a user page, so quit bugging me about it. Also, contrary to popular belief, I do not exist (and neither do you). I'm not nearly as active as I used to be, but still occasionally edit and weild my administrative cudgel. Feel free to leave me a message (be aware that I quickly archive items nowadays, and reserve the right to revert and refactor at will). Talk Archives ~ Contributions ~ Admin Logs --Jeff Uptake

To No One

I'm downright pleased to be informed (by the non-you) that you "do not exist." Beg to differ on the idea that I don't either. I too was once lost to science fiction, but have returned to existance sans human form. Nonetheless, I can virtually control a keyboard. Considering that, in this sense, I do exist and you do not, I ask again that you transfer me to another administrator--preferably one who does exist, admits his or her existance and is not a member of that rouge clan of yours. With all due respect and thanks to the non-existant, ITech 20:38, 7 July 2006 (UTC) Category: Rouge admins

"Transport" orthographic imperialism....

Thanks for your sound decision to raise the matter at Misplaced Pages talk:Naming conventions (categories). Uniformity would be nice, but we've already decided in essentially all such spelling/dialect matters that diversity is the better choice for our community, since we end up not imposing one system on everyone. (And, in the end, it's beautiful!) I suspect Darwinek has misunderstood the Guidelines about national varieties of English, but he's being very persistent. (He even seems on the verge of edit-warring with me in some of my reverts of his guideline-violating changes; and, note, also, he removed warnings from his talk page. But I'm going to assume good faith for the time being!) --Cultural Freedom 2006-07-17 -22:13 (UTC) P.S. We were writing to each other at the same time! Just got your msg. Thanks. -CF

Hi, no probs, it just seems like a massive change to make without a really good discussion one way or the other. I assume, btw, that Darwinek removed your comments because of the "pretty mess" on the talk page. Archiving would be nice (I archive everything except vandalism, frex), but not everyone does it that way. Ziggurat 22:17, 17 July 2006 (UTC)

Re: recent hullabaloo

I guess, what it boils down to for me, is that both you and the other editor, seem to feel that I have "an obvious bias" against the material in that article. I'm sure that you can understand my frustration, I simply cannot understand, without more specific details, why both of you seem to feel this way. I am willing to try to understand, perhaps, and this is why I implore you not to argue lofty goals, and what should or should not happen, but to specifically show me what was biased and inappropriate. I also understand if you don't, perhaps you have no further interest in this matter. Such is life. Take care. TheRingess 04:27, 18 July 2006 (UTC)

Bowing out is a good idea. Me too. I have no further interest in discussing this. Thank you for your time and help. TheRingess 04:33, 18 July 2006 (UTC)

Have replied at your talk, although you seem to have removed it already. I felt an urge to explain as I felt that you misinterpreted me (twice) and User:Jaime234 (once). Nevertheless, Ziggurat 05:45, 18 July 2006 (UTC)
I do not share your point of view that I "misinterpreted" you. Since you stated on my talk page, that you didn't care one way or the other and were finished with the discussion, I decided to delete it. Take care.
I don't know how else to describe this: (me, bolding added here) "I get the impression that Jaime234 is noting that you may be a bit too close to the subject to see it objectively - I can't comment on that, as I don't know anything about you or the subject of the article, but this is the reason judges recuse themselves, and it's worth considering whether this is worth doing here or not." (you) "both you and the other editor, seem to feel that I have "an obvious bias" against the material in that article". In any case, I happen to agree with your reasoning on this, I was just trying to explicate on what I felt was a misunderstanding of Jaime234's suggestion. In any case, I'm not interested in discussing this further as I'm not actually involved in this dispute, but if you still feel that I was out of line I apologize. All the best, Ziggurat 22:03, 18 July 2006 (UTC)

Goat as president

You refered to unsourced trivia, here are some sources you can include:

  1. http://pukeariki.com/en/stories/entertainmentandleisure/whangarepday.asp?pageType=print
  2. http://ballofdirt.com/entries/1479/9233.html
  3. http://www.taranakimuseum.org.nz/en/stories/entertainmentandleisure/whangapres.asp?pageType=print

  7. http://www.republic.org.nz/documents/01-07rep.pdf
  8. http://www.paradise-press.co.nz/updates.html

I admit, the Presidential Goat in Whangamomona is not as famous as the Presidential Cigar in the USA, but it still counts.

Would these be reasonable citations enough, and - if so - could you revert your edit.

Cheers Sumburgh 09:55, 25 July 2006 (UTC)

I saw your note.... me thinks that you might want to do the good deed and revert your edit. Cheers Sumburgh 10:27, 26 July 2006 (UTC)

You have some good citations for the Whangamomona Presidential Goat. So to tag the page as citation needed could be seen as a tad unreasonable. Could please revert your original edit? BTW: You may also want to mention the Presidential Poodle. :-) Cheers Sumburgh 00:15, 1 August 2006 (UTC)

Replied at your talk page. You added this passage, you found sources, and you're the one that wishes this information to stay on the page (I personally think it's trivial and not worth mentioning, but I'm not going to battle about that). I don't see why you wish for me to add the reference instead of doing it yourself unless you're not sure how to go about it, or you're trying to prove a point of some kind. If you're not sure, then please ask. If you're trying to prove a point, it's not succeeding. Ziggurat 00:46, 1 August 2006 (UTC)

The points:

  1. Deleting may be gratifying, but it is equally ungracious.
  2. You didn't discuss the point on the talk page,
  3. You didn't even do 1 google to check to see if the point was right OR wrong.
  4. You didn't even review the article history for citations at point of creation.
  5. You refuse to revert the edit, even when asked nicely.
  6. You refuse to add a citation, even when presented with such. Even when asked nicely.

Also:

  1. 90% of wikipedia has no citation, just deleting 90% of wikipedia is clearly wrong. (Though it I admit it is tempting.)

I speculate that the only reason you deleted the point was because you considered it peculiar and not mundane enough. Thus maybe you forget that the criteria for inclusion in wikipedia is notability, not mundaneability.

And so what is your point?

Please revert.

Your use of {{fact}} in David Hasselhoff

Please don't tag claims about living people which appear like patent nonsense with {{fact}}. Indeed, the fact template says explicitly: Do not use this tag in order to label text which appears false, especially in the case of biographies of living people. Instead, move such text to the discussion page and ask for citations there. The user in question has in fact inserted vandalism into multiple articles, and a quick Google check would have shown the allegation to be nonsense.--Eloquence* 01:37, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

Oddly enough, I have been looking for that citation off and on ever since you left that comment. It had admittedly fallen off my radar screen as of late, but I started thinking of it again when I revisited that discussion for my nomination. Back yonder, I found the text through an online search engine available through my university at the time. I was unable to retrace my path. See Ziggurat, the way he regards his opinion above everybody elses -even the BBC. I had a very bad feeling about him. This is what you get for being nice- I should of been hard with him from the start--Cathyh 04:44, 18 August 2006 (UTC)

Cathyh's allegations and reversion

Cathyh claims that he/she believed I was a vandal and so quickly reverted my changes. That means he/she did not read my edits carefully and assumed irressponsibly that I was a vandal. this user has added references for these POVs, but they still remain POVs. Just because a glorififying article has been published on BBC does not mean that its not POV. This user has merely referenced the POV. I am going to add back some information as you suggested, but I will remove this user's POV reversion. If Cathyh continues to revert these POVs I will refer this user to an administrator. Manmohan Singh article

Cathyh has again reverted my information. This user has attached some references to support POV. I am of this opinion that references POV is POV too and it should be removed, unless it is widely accepted by general public and has been mentioned countless number of times in the media. Singh has been mentioned as one of the key people who carried out reforms of 1991 and this information in present in the article. But calling him as the architect of India is a POV. New Zealander-Israeli relations

No, as I already said, I started Venezuelan-Israeli relations but did not start United States-Venezuelan relations. DanKeshet started it. The reason why I brought these two pages up, obviously, is because numerous experienced users have edited the pages without changing the titles. If you cannot cite policy, then there is no reason to move the page. One could just as easily say that the pages you presented should be moved to the nomenclature I presented. Respectfully, Republitarian 23:47, 18 August 2006 (UTC)

I honestly forgot about moving US-Ven relations. I have moved all three pages. . Respectfully, Republitarian 14:14, 20 August 2006 (UTC)

Taniwharau

Hi, I'm a fellow NZer. Just thought it might be good if someone uninvolved like yourself was to have a look at the article Taniwharau with regard to what should be done with it. My opinions of it are expressed on the Talk page of the article where I had been talking with User Moza about it, some time ago now. (ie I think it should be no more than a disambig or a redirect (to Taniwha), and I think in his last posts on the Talk page Moza was resigning himself to the fact that an idea he was attached strongly to might not be supportable. A look at the changes in the edit history might also be informative to help you understand. Cheers for your time. Kahuroa 09:07, 20 August 2006 (UTC)

I found that we have an article on Hamilton's Fraser High School which has the Māori name Te Kura Tuarua o Taniwharau, and so have edited the disambig again - I think it is feasible now as a disambig. Not sure whether Moza has Taniwharau on his watchlist or not. Cheers for your helpful input. Kahuroa 09:00, 21 August 2006 (UTC)

Deep-sea gigantism

This was a topic that I had originally heard of on Metafilter, and I composed a stub based on discussion and further online research. It is also referred to as "cold-water gigantism." --B 22:19, 22 August 2006 (UTC)
