Alexander Prokhorenko (Russian: Алекса́ндр Алекса́ндрович Прохоре́нко; 21 June 1990 – 17 March 2016), also known as Russian 'Rambo' was a Spetsnaz of Russian Armed Forces during the Palmyra offensive (March 2016). He was identifying targets for Russian airstrikes and was surrounded by ISIS near Palmyra when he ordered an airstrike on himself.

On 11 April 2016, President Vladimir Putin declared Prokhorenko as a Hero of the Russian Federation, the highest Russian honor. His funeral was held in Gorodki on 6 May 2016.

Life

Prokhorenko was from the village of Gorodki in the Orenburg region of Russia. He attended Army Air Defense Corps Military Academy straight after school, and "graduated the academy with honors". He was married and expected his first child when he was killed in action.

Death

According to the Lieutenant General Sergey Kuralenko, head of the Russian Center for Syrian Reconciliation, airstrikes were carried out accordong to the orders of special forces in order to keep Palmyra's historical monuments and civilian areas being bombard. Prokhorenko was a special force and had been on an intelligence mission On March 24 to to direct Russian airstrikes at ISIS targets, where he was discovered and surrounded by ISIS forces. He then ordered an airstrike on his position.

Repatriation of his body

Kremilin, in co-ordinatation with Kurdish forces, recovered and repatriated his body, and it arrived back in Moscow on Friday, according to the Russian defense ministry said. His Repatriation "was a matter of honour for the Russian Defence Ministry," according to a spokesperson.

In popular culture

He was known as Russian 'Rambo' and a teacher at Prokhorenko's former school reportedly said that "she and others wanted now to name the Gorodetskoy Middle School after Prokhorenko."
