Mortal Kombat: Armageddon is the latest title in the Mortal Kombat fighting game series. It is projected to be released for the Xbox and PlayStation 2 game consoles in October 2006, with a Wii version announced for early 2007. There are currently no known plans to release an Xbox version in PAL territories.

On October 3, 2005, it was revealed that Midway registered the Internet domain name MKArmageddon.com on September 23, 2005. In addition to breaking the news on the domain name, TRMKadded that Mortal Kombat: Armageddon will feature an enhanced and improved fighting engine used in the previous games, as well as an expanded Konquest mode and that the game would remain on current generation consoles to make these improvements possible.

On October 4, 2005, an online chat event was organized by Mortal Kombat Online, known as Fight Night. Ed Boon publicly stated that the next Mortal Kombat game "will have a brand spanking new feature that we are very, very excited to announce." Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks producer, Shaun Himmerick, stated at the chat, "while no platforms have been announced yet, but there is plenty of life left in these current systems." According to Ed Boon, Mortal Kombat: Armageddon will have more characters than any other Mortal Kombat game.

Character roster and information

Originally, Armageddon was billed as featuring every single fighter from only the six main installments of the franchise thus far. However, as game progress ensued, developers went on to add characters that were exclusive to the renditions of such titles (for example, Chameleon from Mortal Kombat Trilogy and Rain from Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3) to the final roster.

As of now, the roster of confirmed fighters consists of the following: Ashrah, Baraka, Blaze, Bo' Rai Cho, Chameleon, Cyrax, Daegon, Dairou, Darrius, Drahmin, Ermac, Frost, Fujin, Goro, Havik, Hotaru, Hsu Hao, Jade, Jarek, Jax, Johnny Cage, Kabal, Kai, Kano, Kenshi, Kintaro, Kira, Kitana, Kobra, Kung Lao, Li Mei, Liu Kang, Mavado, Meat, Mileena, Mokap, Moloch, Motaro, Nightwolf, Nitara, Noob Saibot, Onaga, Quan Chi, Raiden, Rain, Reiko, Reptile, Sareena, Scorpion, Sektor, Shang Tsung, Shao Kahn, Sheeva, Shinnok, Shujinko, Sindel, Smoke, Sonya, Stryker, Sub-Zero, Tanya, and Taven.

In January 2006, Game Informer magazine broke the story by presenting an early character list and render of those confirmed to appear in Mortal Kombat: Armageddon. Of the existing roster, a notable absentee from the article was Motaro, the sub-boss in Mortal Kombat 3. It was also unknown if Noob Saibot and Smoke would remain as a team, as they were in Mortal Kombat: Deception.

A small controversy arose from the trailer released in March 2006, which features all the characters on two sides (good characters running towards neutral and evil characters). Simply put, sworn enemies are seen running along side each other, while some settled disputes appear to be revived as former allies are on opposing sides. Because much of the story behind Armageddon had yet to be revealed, the reason for this was unclear. During an interview, Ed Boon said that the developers wanted a battle between two large forces in the video - preferable to having a third, smaller side of neutral characters. Also that in terms of story, character alliances would be more complex than simply two-sided.

The demonstration of the game at E3 in May 2006 showed a different way of selecting characters than previous Mortal Kombat titles. The screen had a two-sided panel with half the roster on each side. Only 16 characters were selectable, one of which would be a character from the “Kreate a Kombatant” feature. The Konquest Mode introduced the character of Taven. Blaze was prominently featured in the build, suggesting that he may appear as the main boss of Armageddon.

The September 2006 issue of the Official Xbox Magazine (which some subscribers received as early as July ), featured a preview of Armageddon. The preview had a new version of the select screen, different from the one seen at E3. This screen has 64 squares in total and is one-sided. Noob Saibot and Smoke had been separated. Motaro and Meat were present for the first time. Taven and Daegon, another character from Konquest Mode, were both included as playable characters. There were also two squares with question marks over them.

In the same issue, the preview mentioned that Khameleon would appear in 3D for the first time. However, the extent of her appearance was then unknown, because she had not been seen in any released screenshots of the game.

On July 31, Midway released a slightly modified character select screen, showing four locked boxes in place of Taven, Daegon, Meat and Blaze. Two “Kreate a Kombatant” icons replaced the question marks, and Chameleon was confirmed as a playable character.

On August 1, a new, updated version of the Game Informer render was released with Motaro, Chameleon and Meat added. It also featured updated looks for Scorpion, Reptile, Noob Saibot, Sektor, and Sareena. Khameleon, Taven, and Daegon are still absent from the roster. Interestingly, Stryker is still wearing his classic Mortal Kombat 3 costume, and wasn't updated, even though both of his costumes for Armageddon have been shown to be different. This could indicate that there may be more then two unlockable costumes per character.

On August 22, Midway released a number of screenshots of Armageddon, one of which showed how Motaro would appear in the game - two legs less than his original four-legged design. A few days later on August 24, it was confirmed that Khameleon will not appear in the PlayStation 2 and Xbox versions of the game. Later, the mentioning of PS2 and Xbox was removed from the statement, seeming to imply that Khameleon will also not be in the Wii version.

Konquest mode

In the September 2006 issue of Official Xbox Magazine, it is stated that the retooled Konquest mode will feature new character Taven and his brother Daegon. The apparent storyline states the brothers were put in suspended animation because their mother, a sorceress and their father, the edenian protector god, foresaw a cataclysmic event brought about by the Mortal Kombat fighters. Their awakening leads into the Konquest mode, which in turn leads into the game's standard play.

Though it has been confirmed that players will use Taven in Konquest, it is unknown how Daegon will play into it.

Successfully completing Konquest will unlock Taven and Daegon for arcade play.

New features

Ed Boon said at E3:

"There have been a number of create-a-character modes in wrestling and boxing games but we wanted to expand on the areas players had control over,"

"We thought it was important to let them define their attacks as well as the look of their fighters." That’s why Armageddon lets players set their fighting styles, right down to the attack associated with each button.

About how it would work with its PS2 online/Xbox Live ability:

"It will really be interesting to see how people will play Armageddon online when they have about 60 existing characters to choose from as well as the ability to take their created fighter and go online against other created fighters,"

"The idea of taking your created fighter online and seeing how they measure up to other players’ fighters is going to create the most exciting and unpredictable fighting experience ever."

So far, the KAK feature seems to only have a human form to work with, though Tarkatan and vampire features were available. Kreate-a-Fighter includes the ability to assign Taunts.

Cinder recently confirmed that there will be 14 different character classes availible in KAK.

"...players will also have the ability to spare their favorite fighters this fate by spawning their own characters: there are at least 14 separate character classes that players will have available to them, with hundreds of choices, making the literal combination of created characters in the millions."

Kreate a Fatality

Also new to the series, is the ability to "create" a fatality. It is actually a constant input of commands until you are unable to put anything else in and the fatality ends, and as such, it is very mix and match and so players may not see the same fatality twice.

It has been mentioned that as it stands currently, there will be at least 10 levels of fatalities (i.e.3 attacks = Level 3), but you may be able to string even more together if you are very good at preforming consecutive Fatalitys. Boon also mentioned that you would be graded on your fatalities, hinting that perhaps higher level fatalities will yield more koins in reward. Also your fatality will have a different name depending on the amount of attacks strung together. These include Bloody Fatality and Brutal Fatality.

  • 1: Fatality
  • 2: Deadly Fatality
  • 3: Killer Fatality
  • 4: Bloody Fatality
  • 5: Mortal Fatality
  • 6: Brutal Fatality
  • 7: Evil Fatality
  • 8: Vicious Fatality
  • 9: Savage Fatality
  • 10: Extreme Fatality
  • 11: Great Fatality
  • 12: Godly Fatality

Motor Kombat

Character select in "Motor Kombat"

Mortal Kombat: Armageddon's mini-game is named "Motor Kombat". True to the name, Ed Boon compares it to Mario Kart in the September 2006 issue of Official Xbox Magazine. Each of the characters has a customized go-kart, as well as their own special moves. The Motor Kombat characters will keep their cartoonish big-head style that was introduced in Deception's "Puzzle Kombat" mode. It will also include style based fatalities for characters, also death traps.

Motor Kombat will have Xbox Live support, as well as off-line support for up to four players with a split-screen display. In the game, players will be able to knock their opponents into various deathtraps on the courses.

The character roster for Motor Kombat is Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Bo' Rai Cho, Jax, Baraka, Raiden, Kitana, Mileena, Cyrax, and Johnny Cage.EVERYONE IN MK comfirmed in an interview by ed boon

Additional information

Mortal Kombat: Armageddon will sum up everything that happened since the first Mortal Kombat game, presumably ending in the destruction of the Mortal Kombat universe (hence the title). It will be the final decider on who will die or who will live and will end the generation of MK fighters. In a sense, Armageddon is "wiping the slate clean", allowing the series to come back with a fresh start.

This will allow the series to enter the next generation consoles with the next generation of Mortal Kombat fighters. While there is no clear information about who will survive, let alone who will emerge as the winner of this latest battle, Ed Boon has already strongly suggested that such fan favorites like Scorpion and Sub-Zero have a high possibility of returning in future Mortal Kombat games. Some believe the premise of Mortal Kombat characters not returning a bit farfetched as not one MK character hasn't returned from the dead, as they are all seen in MKA. ( Even elder Sub-Zero came back as Noob Saibot). But that is what this game is here to do, wipe the slate clean of all characters that are creating clutter in the MK universe.
