The professional wrestling matches at Battleground will feature professional wrestlers performing as characters in scripted events pre-determined by the hosting promotion, WWE. Storylines between the characters played out on WWE's primary television programs, Raw and SmackDown.

At Money in the Bank, Seth Rollins defeated Roman Reigns to win the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. Following this, Dean Ambrose cashed in the Money in the Bank contract and defeated Rollins for the title. The following night on Raw, Reigns and Rollins would have a Money in the Bank rematch and it was to determine who would face Ambrose at Battleground, where the match would end in a double countout. In response to this, Ambrose willingly decided he would defend the championship against both Reigns and Rollins in a Triple threat match at Battleground, which was made official by Shane McMahon.
