Gazanchi Bridge - the historical monument of the XV-XVI centuries

Qazançı (also, Gazanchy, Kazanchi and Kazanchy) is a village and municipality in the Julfa Rayon of Nakhchivan, Azerbaijan. It is located 43 km in the north from the district center, on the right bank of the Alinjachay River, on the slope of the Zangezur ridge. Its population is busy with farming and animal husbandry. There are secondary school, cultural house, two libraries, kindergarten, communication branch, and a medical center in the village. It has a population of 692.

Etymology

The name of the village has been made out from the qazan ethnonym and the suffix of -çi. It is related with the name of the kazan tribe of the ancient Turkic Bulgars. According to sources, the first time they came to the territory of the Transcaucasia into the composition of the Bulgars in the second century of BC. They have been settled in Azerbaijan in the composition of the Huns in the first centuries of the AD, followed into the composition of the Sabirs and Avars, more later into the composition of the Khazars. In the beggining of the 20th century, in the whole Caucasus have been recorded 24 place names and hydronyms with the word of qazan. And in Azerbaijan, there existed 10 villages in Gazanchi name. Currently in Azerbaijan, known 3 Gazan and 4 Gazanchi settlements, 4 Gazan Mountain, 3 Gazan hydronyms. There are Gazanjyk city in Turkmenistan, Kazan city, Kazanka River in Tatarstan, Kazanka railway station, Kazanka city in Ukraine, Qazan Ketken village in Karakalpakstan, Qazanqıslaq, Qazan villages in Uzbekistan, Kazanovka village in province of Tula, Kazansky District in province of Tyumen, Kazan shupkur, Novo Kazanskaya villages in Kazakhstan, Gazanchi village in Armenia, Kazan and Kazan Kulan villages in Dagestan, Kazanabad, Qazanagalı, Qazan in Southern Azerbaijan, Qazancı village in central Iran. It should be noted that there are also the qazan ethnonym in the Turkey and modern Bulgaria territories. At the sources, the kazan tribe is shown into the composition of the Kipchaks in the 13-14 centuries.

Historical and archaeological monuments

Gazanchi Bridge

Gazanchi Bridge - the historical monument in the Gazanchi village of Julfa rayon. According to the its techniques of construction, it belongs to the 15-16 centuries. The single-span, known among people as "humpbacked bridge" this monument, is unsuitable for transport although it remained relatively well. The Gazanchi bridge, was built with the fragments of hewed and polished stone. The shield of its arch and the archivolt was built with the hewed stones. The Gazanchi bridge is the one of the best examples of the single-span bridges in the territory of Azerbaijan Republic.

Gazanchi Fortress

Gazanchi Fortress - the monument of the beginning of the 2-1 millennium of BC in the north from the Gazanchi village of Julfa rayon, on the both banks of the Alinjachay River. The left bank and right bank parts of the fortress are separated from each other by deep canyons; right bank part is in the shaped of the tall conical hill. According to the sources, there was the fortress which was fortified with semicircular towers on the peak of the hill. The left coast of the monument has two parts, it surrounded by the steepness rocks from the all side. At this part has remained the ruins of the half-round towers. The Fortress is consists of a magnificent multi-layered defense system. There is passage from the barrier to each other. The defense walls (the width of 2-2.5 meters) was built in the high architectural style from the hewn large stones. The Gazanchi Fortress, probably was the center of a large tribal unity who lived in the valley of the Alinjachay at the beginning of the 2nd millennium of BC. The found materials (examples of the clay plates in gray and pink colored, stone tools, grinding stones and etc.) from the Gazanchi Fortress during archaeological excavations, is typical of the culture of Nakhchivan. Techniques of construction of fortress walls repeats the fortress of Oghlangala. Surface materials collected from the Gazanchi Fortress consists of the grain stones, examples of the clay pot in the gray and pink colored (pot, bowl, little pot-type pottery etc.). The findings are kept in the Museum of History and Ethnography of Julfa rayon. The Gazanchi Fortress is the connected with the name of the Gazan Khan, the protagonist of the epos of "The Book of Dede Korkut" (Babayev, S., The Toponyms of "The Book of Dede Korkut" in Nakhchivan, Baku, 1999).

Gazanchi

Gazanchi - the settlement of the Middle Ages in the northern part of the same named village of the Julfa rayon. Most of the monument was left under the modern buildings. At the foot of the mountain, in the unharmed part of residence the cultural layer was destroyed, the fragments of glazed and unglazed clay pots scattered to the around. In some places the remained the residues of the wall from the uncouth rocks. The animal figures and clay lamps were found from the area. According to the findings, it is assumed that the Gazanchi settlement belongs to the 9-18 centuries.

Gazanchi Necropolis I

Gazanchi Necropolis I - the archaeological monument of the Middle Ages in the north-east from the Gazanchi village of Julfa rayon, on the elongated hill. In 1991, the exploration research works were carried out. The graves are in the direction of Qibla; the most of the graves have not the gravestones, the chest stones of the graves are in the oblong and rectangular shape (a group of them are in box-shaped). From the area found the fragments of clay pots, also have been found a few of the stone rams. It is supposed that the monument belongs to the 13-17 centuries.

Gazanchi Necropolis II

Gazanchi Necropolis II - the archaeological monument of the Middle Ages in the south-east from the Gazanchi village of the Julfa rayon, on the right bank of the Alinjachay River. In 1991, the exploration research works were carried out. The graves are in the direction of Qibla; the gravestones not remained, the chest stones of the graves are in the oblong and rectangular shape. Some of the chest stones of the graves are flat. On the two graves were defined the geometric lines. According to information, there have been the much more ram figured stones in the cemetery (currently kept only one). It is supposed that the monument belongs to the 14-18 centuries.
