Rich was fatally shot around 4 AM in Washington, D.C., on July 10, 2016. He was a 27-year-old employee of the Democratic National Committee (DNC).
Early life, education, and employment
Rich was a native of Omaha, Nebraska, and a 2011 graduate of Creighton University, where he majored in history and political science.
At the time of his death, Rich was Deputy Director of "Data-for-Voter Protection/Expansion" at the DNC, where he had been employed for two years. He developed a computer application to assist voters in locating polling stations.
Death and aftermath
Rich left the Lou's City Bar in Columbia Heights at 1:45 AM and told the bar manager he would go to a nearby bar. The bar manager stated that Rich was not drunk or even tipsy, although there were reports that he was "highly intoxicated."
Police were alerted to gunfire at 4:20 AM by an automated gunfire locator called ShotSpotter. Rich was shot twice about a block from his home in the Bloomingdale neighborhood of Washington, D.C. in the vicinity of Howard University. His father believes that his son engaged his assailants before he was killed.
He was found conscious but later died in the hospital. Police stated that Rich may have been killed in an attempted robbery. The DC Police Department posted a customary reward of $25,000 for information about the death. WikiLeaks later announced a reward of $20,000 for information leading to a conviction for the killing. After receiving the news of WikiLeaks' reward, the victim's father, Joel Rich, said, "I hope the additional money helps find out who did this." He also said WikiLeaks was "playing a game". WikiLeaks stated: "this should not be taken to imply that Seth Rich was a source for Wikileaks or to imply that his murder is connected to our publications".
DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz issued a statement mourning the loss and praising Rich's work "to protect the most sacred right we share as Americans — the right to vote." Hillary Clinton spoke of this fatality during a speech advocating limiting the availability of guns.
