The Shaktawats descend from Shakti Singh (or Sakta), a son of Udai Singh II and the younger brother of Maharana Pratap. He allied with the Mughals, but returned to his brother's side at the Battle of Haldighati They provided the ruling Thakurs in Sardargarh Thikana.
Notable bearers of the family name include :

- Gulab Singh Shaktawat, Indian freedom fighter, social and political worker of Indian National Congress
