It was developed by Scientific Learning, and is intended to improve students' language and reading skills through games. In a study on Australian speech therapy students, the average improvement was from the 14th to the 32nd percentile. However, this study (and many others cited on the Scientific Learning Corporation website, merely compared students before and after treatment. This form of study potentially conflates maturation and practice effects (getting better at the test) with actual treatment benefits. The Coalition for Evidence-Based Policy recently reviewed Fast ForWord, focusing on "gold-standard" studies that involve randomized assignment of students to receive or not receive the treatment, and pronounced it ineffective as a treatment of reading disorders.
