WrestleMania is considered WWE's flagship event, having been described as the Super Bowl of sports entertainment. The ticket sales went on dated on November 18, 2016, with individual tickets ranging from as low as $38 to $2,130. On October 31, 2016, traveling packages with accommodations ranging anywhere from $950 to as much as $5,900 per person were sold.
The card will include matches resulting from scripted storylines and have results predetermined by WWE on the Raw and SmackDownbrands. Storylines are produced on WWE's weekly television shows, Monday Night Raw,SmackDown Live and 205 Live, the latter of which is cruiserweight-exclusive. As per tradition, the winner of the Royal Rumble match earns a title match for the world championship of his brand at WrestleMania. The 2017 match was won by Randy Orton, earning him a WWE Championship match in the main event of WrestleMania 33. On the July 27, 2009 edition of Raw, guest star Shaquille O'Neal confronted Chris JerichoandBig Show, which led to Shaq attacking Show. Years later, Shaq was a surprise entrant in the André the Giant Memorial Battle Royal at WrestleMania XXXII, which Baron Corbin ultimately won. He and Big Show went after each other; however, the rest of the wrestlers eliminated both of them. At the 2016 ESPY Awards, Big Show and Shaq had another brief confrontation on the red carpet. A match was proposed, which Shaq accepted. In November 2016, Big Show was interviewed by Chris Van Vliet from Deco Drive. Van Vliet asked about the potential match and Big Show said if Shaq shows up at WrestleMania, he will get "smacked up." On January 9, 2017, Shaq made an Instagram post of himself working out with the caption "I'm coming for you, Big Show!" A few days later, Big Show responded with a similar post on Twitter. In 2014, The Shield (Seth Rollins, Dean Ambrose and Roman Reigns) were involved in a rivalry with Evolution (Triple H, Randy Orton and Batista). After The Shield defeated Evolution in back-to-back pay-per-views matches at Extreme Rules and Payback, Batista left Evolution and WWE altogether after Triple H blamed him for the losses then revealed his "plan B": Rollins, who subsequently attacked Ambrose and Reigns and joined The Authority, turning heel in the process. Rollins would be the forefront of The Authority for the next two years: he won the then-WWE World Heavyweight Championship (now WWE Championship) at WrestleMania XXXI, but was forced to vacate the title in November 2015 due to a knee injury at a live event in Dublin, Ireland. Rollins returned in 2016 and was drafted to the Raw brand. He faced Finn Bálor for the inaugural WWE Universal Championship at SummerSlam, but came up short. After Bálor was forced to vacate the title due to a shoulder injury incurred during their SummerSlam match, Rollins qualified for a fatal four-way match for the vacant title. On the August 29, 2016 edition of Raw, Rollins faced Reigns, Big Cass and Kevin Owens for the title, in which a returning Triple H, who had not been seen since losing the WWE World Heavyweight Championship to Reigns at WrestleMania XXXII, helped Rollins eliminate Reigns, then turned on Rollins by giving him a Pedigree, allowing Owens to win the championship. The incident was only passively mentioned the following week, but went unaddressed by Rollins until the December 5, 2016 edition of Raw, where Rollins called out Triple H, stating that he would go through both Owens and Jericho to get the championship in order to get to Triple H. He continued his antagonizing of Triple H on the December 26, 2016 edition of Raw, calling Triple H a coward to his wife and Raw Commissioner Stephanie McMahon. On the January 23, 2017 edition of Raw, during Rollins' match with Sami Zayn, Triple H's music played, distracting Rollins and allowing Zayn to steal Rollins' spot in the Royal Rumble match. Because Triple H also runs NXT, Rollins knew that he would be at NXT TakeOver: San Antonio and he appeared at the event and challenged Triple H to a match. Triple H came out at the top of the ramp and signaled for security. Rollins fought off the initial guards before more came out and eventually overwhelmed him, who took him away. In a follow-up interview, Triple H said that there is a difference between the Triple H that created NXT and Triple H the wrestler, before seemingly accepting the challenge.
