AJM's advice to new editors

  • Look at the article to see how it is laid out. The Table of Contents is the best place to start.
  • Read the article to see if what you want to add or remove is appropriate, necessary, or adds value.
  • Search for the right place to put it.
  • Check Use the "Show Preview" to make sure that what you have done is appropriate and correct.
  • Discuss any change about which you are uncertain, by placing your proposed text, or just a suggestion, on the talk page. Someone who watches the article will usually answer in a day or so. You can monitor this by clicking the watch tag at the top of the page.
  • Be aware
    • that an addition inserted between two sentences or paragraphs that are linked in meaning can turn the existent paragraphs into nonsense.
    • that a lengthy addition or the creation of a new sub-section can add inappropriate weight to just one aspect of a topic.

When adding images

  • Look to see if the subject of your image is already covered. Don't duplicate subject matter already present. Don't delete a picture just to put in your own, unless your picture is demonstrably better for the purpose. The caption and nearby text will help you decide this.
  • Search through the text to find the right place for your image. If you wish it to appear adjacent to a particular body of text, then place it above the text, not at the end of it.
  • Look to see how the pictures are formatted. If they are all small thumbnails, do not size your picture at 300 px. The pictures in the article may have been carefully selected to follow a certain visual style e.g. every picture may be horizontal, because of restricted space; every picture might be taken from a certain source, so they all match. Make sure your picture looks appropriate in the context of the article.
  • Read the captions of existent pictures, to see how yours should fit in.
  • Check the formatting, placement, context and caption before you leave the page by using the Show preview function, and again after saving.
  • Discuss If your picture seems to fill a real identifiable need in the article, but doesn't fit well, because of fo,rmatting or some other constraint, then put it on the talk page and discuss, before adding.
  • Be aware that adding a picture may substantially change the layout of the article. Your addition may push another picture out of its relevant section or cause some other formatting problem.
  • Edit before adding. Some pictures will look much better, or fit an article more appropriately if they are cropped to show the relevant subject.

2012 Olympic Closing Ceremony

Please review wikipedia policy Misplaced Pages:Copyright violations. The section I removed is directly copied and pasted from this link and is protected under copyright so it cannot be directly copied. There is no grey area on this, directly copied material from a copyrighted source has to be deleted. Please do not re add the section as it is vandalism. Ravendrop 15:52, 12 August 2012 (UTC)

I wasn't the original poster, and with hours to go to the ceremony it isn't a big deal. It didn't seem right to delete so much of this article when the material in question has been there for some days now, and will certainly be revised very shortly when the ceremony begins.. Formatting changes, re: Paralympics

Why do you keep changing words around and removing commas? I had written things to flow correctly, and your undescribed changes completely wrecked them. ViperSnake151  Talk  16:55, 16 August 2012 (UTC)

Hello - that's a somewhat blunt way of making a first contact! You might want to take a look at WP:MOS as far as usage of commas is concerned? It generally doesn't make for easy reading to start lots of sentences with single words followed by a comma, such as "Additionally, ..." or "However, ...", and indeed such usage is not always correct. It's also awkward to start sentences with the qualifying information such as "As it did during the summer Olympics, Royal Mail..." since the reader has to read the first phrase and keep it in mind until they get to the subject of the sentence. Material is easiest to read in English if sentences lead off with the subject, and then verb and object, with any additional qualifications included within the sentence between commas where appropriate. I found parts of the article to be poorly drafted and difficult to read - if we have a difference of opinion on any particular changes I'm happy to discuss further and/or seek other views. Disambiguation link notification for August 4

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Misplaced Pages appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited 2012 Summer Olympics opening ceremony, you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages The Wicker Man and Bladerunner (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Arrival

Hi, Ian. I'm leaving it alone since it's not a big deal, but just FYI, Misplaced Pages:Manual of Style/Film actually doesn't require us to be strictly chronological in giving the plot if it's clearer to explain certain things earlier rather than later. "Lastly, events in the film do not have to be written in the order in which they appear on screen. If necessary, reorder the film's events to improve understanding of the plot." But like I said, no biggie and I'm not touching the edit. --Tenebrae (talk) 21:16, 11 December 2016 (UTC)

Oh, no argument there. I was just doing a bigger-picture thing. --Tenebrae (talk) 21:35, 11 December 2016 (UTC)
Works for me. Also, you can leave a name and timestamp on comments by hitting four tildes ( the ~ symbol). --Tenebrae (talk) 21:43, 11 December 2016 (UTC)

Arrival

Thank you for your edit at Arrival (2016 film). Something about the stock phrase about the arithmetic mean always bothered me, and since I couldn't put my finger on it, I left it alone. But you nailed it exactly — it's non-specific to any given film. I'll likely be following this example. Good edit! --Tenebrae (talk) 18:56, 22 December 2016 (UTC)

Thanks Tenebrae - in a very small way this touches on what I think is a big issue for WP; freed of the most obvious constraint of an encyclopaedia (space/volume/weight) we have a mania for replicating the same information over and over - separate-page-itis is the worst of it - which is fine, except that over time differences creep in to the different versions (even basic stuff like different dates for the same historical event). In TV someone does a cast list for a series, then someone does separate pages for each season, each with a cast list, then someone creates an overall cast list page and does the job all over again. It makes keeping WP up to date a bigger and bigger task and you don't have to spend much time here to start finding internal consisistency problems. Anyhow, <rantmode/off>; seasons's greetings! IanB2 (talk) 03:48, 23 December 2016 (UTC)

Sully

Hi, Ian. I was just going by the citation, which is a UK cite. I'm not going to revert or anything, but wouldn't you think that we would need a cite for more than one country if we're going to imply it has that title in more than one country? No biggie, just a thought. --Tenebrae (talk) 00:32, 24 December 2016 (UTC)

Hello again Tenebrae. The 'miracle on the Hudson' strapline is being used for the film in Argentina, Bulgaria, Brazil, Chile, Czech Republic, Finland, Hungary, Mexico and the UK, and is I believe actually the name of the film (no Sully) in Croatia, Denmark Lithuania, Latvia, Portugal, Slovenia, and Japan. Plus in the US it is described as the 'informal title'. And there was the review I saw that suggests India for the first list, as well. This seems way too much detail to put into the article! Season's greetings IanB2 (talk) 03:36, 24 December 2016 (UTC)
I understand. I'm only asking for citations. We can't claim it's used outside the UK if we only have a UK cite. In order to say that that title appears in other countries, plural, we need to include a couple of citations verifying this. Otherwise, we're making an uncited claim. Since you say that this title is being used in those other countries, I would have to ask: How do you know this? --Tenebrae (talk) 08:13, 25 December 2016 (UTC)
IMDb has a lengthy list, although not comprehensive as it doesn't include India, for example. Do we have a citation for the movie being called just Sully? ;) IanB2 (talk) 08:56, 25 December 2016 (UTC)
I appreciate the humor, but Misplaced Pages doesn't allow the wikia IMDb to be used as reference sourcing since anyone can post anything and there's virtually no editorially oversight. Misplaced Pages makes exceptions for WGA-verified credits. I can help search for cites, but please work with me here. If IMDb is the only place making that clean about the other countries, we can't imply it's anywhere beyond UK given the single cite currently there.
Oh, and yes, I can:
Tenebrae I have raised a general point (arising from the talk item below this one) concerning the title on the talk page of the film, and included a cite of the movie poster in Slovenia. In my view the use of the title without 'Sully' in it is more notable than whether or not the strapline is being used in the title. IanB2 (talk) 09:35, 25 December 2016 (UTC)

Only the titles used in the English-speaking world are of note in the lead sections, apart from the the title in the country of origin. Don't remove the Sully aka again. Talk if you want to make controversial changes. Thank you. — Film Fan 00:02, 25 December 2016 (UTC)

IMDb is a reputable source. I have raised the point on the Talk page (as you might have done, rather than reverting a factually correct edit?) IanB2 (talk) 09:18, 25 December 2016 (UTC)
Actually, as noted above, IMDb is not a reliable source. --Tenebrae (talk) 09:32, 25 December 2016 (UTC)
OK, fair enough. I have cited the movie poster used in Slovenia on the talk page of the film.
That's cool, but you actually need to put it in the article!   : )   --Tenebrae (talk) 09:40, 25 December 2016 (UTC)
very amusing. Given the objection above, we need to resolve the issue in talk first IanB2 (talk) 09:42, 25 December 2016 (UTC)

Vikings?

It's been a half-hour since you reverted me again, this time without explanation. Were you planning to, or...? Alex|The|Whovian 13:31, 2 February 2017 (UTC)

Yes, it was deliberate. Your desire to find stuff to revert (your edit effectively being such) seems over-tuned. There is no need to change the links, which were made originally to resolve an editing issue as a compromise solution that you yourself suggested. IanB2 (talk) 14:33, 2 February 2017 (UTC)
And then, if you remember correctly, I revoked the suggestion because it didn't suit the article, which left you with no support not consensus for your edits. This allowed me to restore the last stable version. Do you disagree with this reasoning? Alex|The|Whovian 15:05, 2 February 2017 (UTC)
Yes. The article is stable and compliant with MOS as it is. Suggesting a compromise and then "revoking" it when it is accepted is not constructive editing. IanB2 (talk) 16:52, 2 February 2017 (UTC)
Pray tell, what part of the MOS is it compliant with? And people change their mind when they see that something isn't working out properly. That's not a matter or destructive or constructive editing, that's just how life is. Alex|The|Whovian 00:23, 3 February 2017 (UTC)
Every part. And the right approach if you want to return to an issue we had moved on from weeks ago is to resume the discussion on the talk page (where the last contribution is mine), not to go back and delete a whole load of changes and not even offer any explanation to support the edit. So, yes, it was destructive. And it is remarkable that you did this on the very same day that you undermine the work of a batch of other editors by heavy handedly rushing off and deleting big chunks of text from some very popular pages (again without explanation) within hours of new MOS text being uploaded. Please try and use tags (such as citation required) or talk pages and be a little less eager to revert or delete other people's good faith work? IanB2 (talk) 04:17, 3 February 2017 (UTC)
I gave an explanation. There is no support for it. No consensus. That stands on nothing. I'm not sure how this relates to my other contributions, or how a "citation needed" tag is replied for where to link to a page? Alex|The|Whovian 04:24, 3 February 2017 (UTC)

No, if you go back and check your first edit/revert you will see that there is no explanation or edit summary whatsoever. IanB2 (talk) 04:32, 3 February 2017 (UTC) IanB2 (talk) 04:32, 3 February 2017 (UTC)

My apologies; you are correct. However, I then offered an explanation, to which you reverted without one. And now, here we are. Alex|The|Whovian 04:33, 3 February 2017 (UTC)
