Re: Missing one in WP:SIGN F&A

You are of course correct in regards to the "Features and Admins" column in this week's Misplaced Pages Signpost. I'll add a retraction next issue. I missed his entry in WP:100. Thank you for pointing this out to me.

Also, thanks for leading me to your extensive pages about RfAs and related voting issues. I found the resource quite helpful, and spent a good deal of time flipping through the respective pages.

Sorry again, and keep up the good work on your project. Would you mind if I said thanks to you in the column in making the correction, as well as link to your user subpage? Please respond so I can add this to the article. I think it would be interesting for our readers. Thanks! Ian Manka Talk to me! 17:50, 9 August 2006 (UTC)

admin username change

It came up on the discussion on WP:AN that my (now previous) username MichaelZimmer didn't appear on WP:LA because I had a user name change. Well, I just did it again (long story), and now I'm ZimZalaBim. Just letting you know in case other updates need to be made. Thanks. --ZimZalaBim (talk) 02:40, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

To his credit, the bureaucrat who renamed you (Warofdreams) also updated WP:LA. Cheers, NoSeptember 10:02, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

First off thanks. Your edits corrected the problem of decreasing font size, but the color bleeding is still there. -JCarriker 11:33, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

NoSeptember is back (from my Wikibreak)

I will restore my talk page shortly. For those who used this page during my wikibreak, what did you think of the messaging system? I think it may have potential even when I'm not on wikibreak.

User:NoSeptember/wikibreak was transcluded onto this page during my Wikibreak. NoSeptember 01:34, 22 August 2006 (UTC)

Welcome back!

Welcome back! And, about the messaging system..... I don't think it is a good idea because a)if people want to discuss on a discussion, they will have to find the appropriate discussion in the history, reply, and revert themselves. b) if people want to read stuff, it would be hard too. Maybe a "central archive" would be better than having people search through history. GeorgeMoney (talk) 01:42, 22 August 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the welcome :). I'll wait for more feedback and think about the messaging system. NoSeptember 01:59, 22 August 2006 (UTC)

1000th Admin?

Hey NoSeptember,

Since you are kinda like the Admin-stat-guru around here, I figured I'd go ahead and ask you... aren't we quite close to promoting the 1000th administrator? Near as I could figure, my promotion a few weeks ago brought Misplaced Pages to 971 Admins. The way I calculated it, if the current batch of RFAs go as they are right now, user:NawlinWiki would be #1,000. Although maybe it's silly, it's kind of a cool milestone, I think. Or am I paying too much attention to Admin-cruft? (No need to respond to this bit of frippery if I am...) Happy editing! :) --Firsfron of Ronchester 03:18, 22 August 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for your note. I added the cool admin-counting template to my userspace. Very cool, N.S. :) I thought about posting something about this to WT:RFA, but I figured I'd talk with you first... Anyway, cheers! :) --Firsfron of Ronchester 03:43, 22 August 2006 (UTC)

Chart Data Help

Regarding the chart request you added to WT:RFA, do you know where I could find out how many articles existed on Misplaced Pages at a given moment in time? Thanks in advance. -- tariqabjotu 15:20, 24 August 2006 (UTC)

I answered at WT:RFA. NoSeptember 15:41, 24 August 2006 (UTC)
See Image:En-admin-growth.png; I could not figure out how to superimpose the line in Microsoft Excel. Are you familiar with how that's done (I only saw a simpler bar graph-line combination). -- tariqabjotu 17:00, 24 August 2006 (UTC)
I have no idea. The reason I asked for someone to create this graph is because I don't do that sort of thing at all, although I use WP based charts like this one. I'll have to compare your data to mine at User:NoSeptember/Admin stats. NoSeptember 17:08, 24 August 2006 (UTC)
I see; there are major differences. Perhaps your data would be more accurate since (I presume) you looked at the sysop permissions list yourself. It is quite possible that the data at Misplaced Pages:List of administrators is not updated as often as it should be. -- tariqabjotu 17:13, 24 August 2006 (UTC)
Actually, I got mine from WP:LA also, and I see that our data is just about the same. I was able to identify inactive admins in the early months (2002/2003) by closely studying the history of certain early admins and discussions and edit summarries from WP:LA, which is why my number is lower (the difference between our numbers would represent the "inactive" number). The other area of difference is just the most recent 3 or so months, this is due to a user who transferred a bunch of active admins to the semiactive category using a different definition of semiactive than has been used historically, this artificially inflates the semiactive category (and maybe the inactives too) so I adjusted for it in my admin stats to remain consistent with the historical trends. If you adjusted your chart to my figures you would simply be adding inactives to the early years, and keeping the semiactive definition consistent for the recent months, which I think would improve the chart. The sysop permissions data would miss all distinctions between active, semiactive and inactive... it only properly catches former admins. NoSeptember 17:25, 24 August 2006 (UTC)
I'll be making the requested changes to the chart. However, I'm curious whether you accidentally included Rambot in your February 2003 and March 2003 statistics. By my count, there were 44 admins at the end of January 2006, but then after February 2006 there were 45 admins only because Rambot was added. In my graph, there was no change in total admins between the two months, but I noticed a change in active admins in your table. See the end of February 2003 and the end of January 2003. -- tariqabjotu 20:08, 24 August 2006 (UTC)
You are probably right about that, errors do creep in :). NoSeptember 20:48, 24 August 2006 (UTC)

Questions?

Hello NoSeptember, I saw the questions on Tony's talk page and wonder if you have worries about arb clerking that I need to address.

Background about my clerking: Knowing that Tony is clerking most cases alone, while he was on his break I started helping a little by reminding arbitrators of skipped votes on cases ready to close. I was reluctant to do more without the official okay of the Arb comm. That was my personal preference and I have no problem with other people doing helpful tasks on the arbitration pages. The arb comm can best speak to exactly what is helpful and what is not.

If you have questions about my clerking please ask me. I'm very open to community feedback, especially from thoughtful users like you. ;-) Take care, FloNight 13:39, 27 August 2006 (UTC)

Are you accusing me of "staging" something?

I hope I'm misreading you, but this remark made me blink in disbelief. It sounds exactly like you're accusing me of some deception or collusion — I assume collusion with Giano — some type of dishonest practice, "for an audience". Are you? Please be as specific and explicit as possible on this head, I'm really interested. Bishonen | talk 20:43, 30 August 2006 (UTC).

Of course not and nothing in the post even hinted at deception or collusion or dishonesty. Where did you come up with such an idea? The most I said about you was that you misunderstood my original post there. Please do not try to interpret complicated layers of hidden meaning into my posts, I tend to post quite literal thoughts and am not trying to create hidden messages. When I say for example, "there is nothing wrong with encouraging users to keep their posts civil", I mean just that without any sort of hidden meaning. And I hope you agree with that simple statement, and I encourage you to leave encouragements to remain civil here whenever you feel it is needed (I promise I won't try to find any sort of hidden meaning in it if you do). NoSeptember 22:23, 30 August 2006 (UTC)
Where did I come up with... right. Well, I assumed I was part of "some users" and "at least two users". Now you tell me you intended no connection between the sentences these appeared in, and the following sentences about "staged wikidrama" and an "audience". Even though they were all part of the same single short paragraph. I'm glad to hear it. If you were a student of mine, I would "encourage" you to try for a greater degree of control of textual implication. But I won't be so patronizing. Bishonen | talk 23:25, 30 August 2006 (UTC).
Yes, it was a separate thought, I don't make posts with a bunch of short paragraphs usually. <<Special Bishonen complete change of thought notification :)>> I agree with your RfA statement that blocks can have consequences, particularly in how blocked users react. I think the same is true of users who have to deal with ongoing incivility, it can affect their attitude about wikipedia and even whether they will continue at the project. How people react to incivility should be taken as seriously as how they react to blocking, and it's the friends of a user who should be the first to encourage that user to remain civil at all times. ED

I saw you've been removing links to encyclopedia dramatica and want to inform you that they even have an interwiki prefix for it at m:Interwiki map. Do you think the interwiki should be removed? I think it should be removed. And it is also breaking the rules about the interwikis. "Remember to specify why the prefix would be useful on a significant number of pages on Wikimedia Foundation projects". How is ED helpful? GeorgeMoney (talk) 03:42, 2 September 2006 (UTC)

You have a good point. A request to remove it would have to be made here, and I have no idea of what standards they would apply to such a request, but it would be worth bringing the issue to their attention. NoSeptember 03:59, 2 September 2006 (UTC)
The reason I found out about the interwiki was Freakofnurture blocked 74.104.100.26 with the block summary of just a link to the ED page on nathan using the interwiki, which I find highly inappropriate. GeorgeMoney (talk) 17:01, 2 September 2006 (UTC)

Clearly understood

Sorry for the posts on the encyclopedic rival of Misplaced Pages which from now on will go unnamed from my part. I was only trying to inform Phaedriel of what was going on for her benefit. Also, I would like to know your opinion on the case of the former Wikipedian Encyclopedist. Has this type of thing happened before? Is he now a "major" vandal - given the amount and the sheer (mostly positive) history of the user? NOVO-REI 02:14, 3 September 2006 (UTC)

Only by returning to constant productive article editing will he return to the good graces of the community, forgeting all thoughts of RfA, forgeting all disputations with other users and past controversies, and so on. And he doesn't need the Encyclopedist username to do productive editing (I'm sure he is already editing by IP anyway, perhaps not a lot though). I don't think there is such a thing as a major vandal, all vandals are more and more just being considered as bothersome, and should be and are starting to be ignored. What happened months ago is no longer significant, Misplaced Pages has moved on. NoSeptember 15:17, 3 September 2006 (UTC)

NOVO-REI = Encyclopedist?

I have a suspicion that NOVO-REI and Encyclopedist might be the same person or at least connected in some way. Here's my evidence: NR's user page looks similar in style and design to Encyclopedist's former user page; both E and NR are college students in Florida; both list English as their native language and have a decent command of Spanish and Portuguese, with some command of French and Interlingua; and both show an interest in history. What do you think? Scobell302 06:17, 4 September 2006 (UTC)

I had considered the possibility, and wrote the reply above assuming Encyclopedist would read it sooner or later. But I don't really care about role accounts unless and until they start acting badly. Misplaced Pages can not truly ban anyone from posting, and as long as they are posting constructively, we have no need to worry about socks. Btw, whose role account are you? ;) NoSeptember 12:41, 4 September 2006 (UTC)

thank you

Hello there, thank you for your kind praise. I do still feel badly about it. As Gmaxwell rightly points out on his user page, not assuming good faith can potentially scare away well-meaning editors of any experience level. I tried to be sufficiently clear in my initial message as to why I objected to the image, without being unduly harsh. Looking back at my choice of words, the message seems at least polite, if perhaps a bit cold. I think I could have handled that a little better.

In any case, thanks for your feedback and for your praise! --Tachikoma 03:52, 6 September 2006 (UTC)

Hi everyone. If this is your first time filling out a survey, read this. To fill out a questionaire sheet, simply send me a post to my talk page, clearly stating your choice for each answer. For example: For Question 1, you might choose to place on the message, "Q1: A)" or "Question 1: Choice A." etc etc. It's up to you, as long as I get the general jist of what your choices are. You have around 1 week to return a survey sheet, but late entrie's will be accepted.

Remember however, your personal choices may be read whilst they are on my talk page. I will understand if you don't wish to answer some or all of the survey due to this. For this reason I have also placed an "Abstain" choice for each question. Try & answer truthfully, or don't answer at all if you can't.

However, your personal choices will not be expressed on the survey's outcome, instead it will be part of a larger finding, such as "60% of people eat chocolate, 25% never eat chocolate & 5% of people chose to abstain from answering..." I will never say, "90% of people eat chocolate, while only Fruityman said he didn't..." This would be an invasion of privacy. However, if a question has (Please explain) or (Please elaborate) as a choice, your specific answer may be used in the survey outcome, although your name will not be. If a question does not have (Please explain) as a question choice, but your intended choice is not represented on the choice list, then feel free to provide another choice which fits your description.

You're probably getting bored reading all of this so I'll wrap up. To see outcomes of the results, see my Polls subpage. Feel free to comment on anything! Feedback is always welcome. Most importantly, have fun. Topics will vary greatly & surveys may be resent out at later times to re-assess a consensus if survey numbers have grown significantly. If you know anyone who would be interested in these surveys, send them to my talk page or if you see this survey sheet, send your own answers in! Thanks. -- Spawn Man.

Freestylefrappe, Ya ya Ya etc

As you unblocked Ya ya ya ya ya is this now the primary account of this user? Is the arbitration ruling restricting him to one account still in place? Also I don't understand the current user page contents ] which don't seem to relate to fsp or ya ya. In any case it is very different to ]82.41.98.219 12:36, 13 September 2006 (UTC)

Ya ya ya ya ya ya is the account he selected per Dmcdevit's talk page. As long as he doesn't violate any policies he can set up his pages as he likes, redirecting the alternate accounts to the Ya ya account. Sockpuppet tags are not needed, all accounts other than Ya ya are indef blocked. NoSeptember 15:46, 13 September 2006 (UTC)

Admin graphs

If it's not too much trouble, can you do an admin graph of admin growth over featured article percentage? Featured article statistics can be found here. You have the admin statistics, of course. Thanks in advance. -- Миборовский 03:57, 15 September 2006 (UTC)

I see. Thanks anyway. I'll let you know if I do make a graph. -- Миборовский 06:17, 16 September 2006 (UTC)
