Mantenuto was born in Holliston, Massachusetts. He is an alumnus of the University of Maine, where he played ice hockey. His time playing hockey alloted him the opportunity to audition and ultimately win the role of O'Callahan, a player on the 1980 Olympic men's ice hockey team, who beat the Soviet team in what is now referred to as the Miracle On Ice.
Mantenuto didn't actively pursue an acting career, only appear in two other films, including the Matthew McConaughey feature Surfer, Dude. He ultimately enlisted in the United States Military.
On April 24, it was announced by Col. Guillaume "Will" Beaurpere that Mantenuto was found dead at the age of 35 in Des Moines, Washington. It was later revealed he had committed suicide by shooting himself. He is survived by his wife and two children.
