The city, which hosts a population of 400,000, is located at the southern tip of Malay Peninsula.
The city itself is controlled by the Johor Bahru city council, but it is dividing into branches over the years as the city is expanding. The Tebrau highway, which branches out to the North-South Expressway, becomes what is known as Jalan Pandan. This road acts as another highway that leads the traffic to Kota Tinggi, where it branches out to several other highways that goes to Mersing, Desaru, and even right up to Kuantan and Kota Bahru. However, traffic jams do occur around dawn and again and dusk, partly due to the fact that there are too many traffic light junctions and of its stony road.
On the other hand, if one wants to travel around the entire Johor Bahru area itself, one can drive onto the Johor Bahru inner circle ring road itself, a circular expressway that takes a person to many places that he wished to go.
The city itself also has several shopping centres and hotels. However, due to the poor locality, many shopping centres that include the Best World Plaza and became bankrupt. Others, for example, the City Square, received bustling business as it was located between Jalan Wong Ah Fook and Jalan Tun Abdul Razak, the two roads that lead to the immigration checkpoint to Singapore. Many Singaporeans favour to shop there.
