This finch is named after the Yariguies tribe, indigenous to that region of Colombia. It is a small bird, with distinctive gold feathers on the flank and breast along with black feathers along the wings, back, and tail. It has a russet crown that resembes a mohawk. The Yariguies Brush Finch can be distinguished from its closest relative (the yellow-breasted brush finch) by its solid black back and the lack of white marks on its wings.
