Rule has several meanings:

  • A rule in mathematics is something which is always true.
  • A rule is a law applied to citizens in the wider interests of society. (This may include rules that acquire legal force under the terms of a contract.)
  • A rule may also be used a straightedge and for measurement.
  • Rule of thumb is a suggestion which is usually a good idea.
