He dropped out of Stanford and co-founded Zip2 Corporation in 1995. In 1999, Compaq's AltaVista division acquired Zip2 for $300 million. He then co-founded PayPal, acquired by eBay in October 2002 for $1.5 billion in stock. Musk owned 11%.
In June 2002 he founded his third company, SpaceX, of which he is currently the CEO and Chief Technology Officer. This company is developing space launch vehicles, with an emphasis on low cost and high reliability. The first two launch vehicles planned are the Falcon I and Falcon V rockets.
Musk owns a $1.2M McLaren F1 sports car, as well as a $250K L39 Soviet trainer airplane.
