Finding a source

Tips for finding a source yourself
Main page: WP:Find your source
  • Send a request to the author(s) of research papers for a copy of their paper by email
  • Check on Google Books, or your local library or national library may be able to obtain it through an interlibrary loan or subscription
  • Search Google Scholar for archived copies of journals in institutional repositories
  • Check whether your alma mater's library offers electronic document delivery services for alumni—many do, for a small fee

Note that sites like LibGen and Sci-Hub offer direct, free access to a very large range of publications, but there are legal questions around their use and neither the Wikimedia Foundation nor the Misplaced Pages community endorses them.

New Zealand sources for Muriel Grace Widdowson

Hello. I'm looking for sources to improve my article on Muriel Grace Widdowson:

Thanks. --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 00:29, 17 October 2017 (UTC)

MrLinkinPark333, sent the first. --Usernameunique (talk) 21:47, 28 November 2017 (UTC)
MrLinkinPark333, sent the second. --Usernameunique (talk) 17:15, 29 November 2017 (UTC)
@Usernameunique: Wow. Thanks a bunch ;) --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 20:10, 29 November 2017 (UTC)

Found this one that may/may not be useful. It's about a stained glass window that Widdowson unvieled at a hospital where she worked at after her retirement:

The stain glassed window isn't as important, but the third one I'll leave open. --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 20:03, 28 December 2017 (UTC)
I'm trying to get the third article. If I can, then I'll file a second request for the article you struck, since the source is the same. ~ Rob13 17:38, 5 January 2018 (UTC)
Okay. Take as long as you need as this request of mines isn't a priority. Thanks! --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 21:06, 5 January 2018 (UTC)
MrLinkinPark333, just sent the 12 October 1971 article. --Usernameunique (talk) 19:45, 22 January 2018 (UTC)
Got it. Thank you. --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 19:48, 22 January 2018 (UTC)

Hawaiian Music and Musicians: An Illustrated History

This may be easier if it was done via a physical checking out and scanning rather than requesting pages to be scanned since I have no idea the specific page numbers. I need both editions since the later edition adds recent research. Please send me both editions' complete index and table of content for future inquires, and the pages for Lena Machado and the Ellis brothers: John and William. Please send User:Maile66 as well. Thanks so much.

--KAVEBEAR (talk) 17:51, 12 November 2017 (UTC)

@KAVEBEAR: I can get the Illustrated History at the Hennepin County Library, but they don't have the later edition. I can stop by tomorrow evening. = paul2520 (talk) 02:20, 14 November 2017 (UTC)
@KAVEBEAR and Maile66: I borrowed a copy of the first book. Library doesn't have the updated edition. Hoping to get to the scans tonight. Should I use the "email user" feature when I get around to it? = paul2520 (talk) 12:56, 15 November 2017 (UTC)
Paul2520 I'm OK with it being email. — Maile (talk) 19:10, 15 November 2017 (UTC)
@KAVEBEAR and Maile66: I emailed you both. I forgot to mention, there's also a 17-page annotated bibliography which looks really nice. = paul2520 (talk) 17:13, 18 November 2017 (UTC)
Thanks!--KAVEBEAR (talk) 19:20, 18 November 2017 (UTC)
Got it! Thanks! — Maile (talk) 19:25, 18 November 2017 (UTC)
@KAVEBEAR and Maile66: FYI, I returned the first book this morning. I was thinking, libraries often take suggestions of items to purchase. Though the process takes time, it might be a good idea if you anticipate using these books in the future. = paul2520 (talk) 19:10, 6 December 2017 (UTC)
Thank you for the suggestion, and for doing all this work for us. — Maile (talk) 19:16, 6 December 2017 (UTC)

First two chapters?

of Cecily Duchess of York, ISBN 1474272258, by Pat Laynesmith. Pub. Bloomsbury this year. Possibly too new d'you think? If not, and anyone can oblige, I'd be most appreciative. Cheers! Many thanks to all. — fortunavelut luna 15:31, 18 November 2017 (UTC)

@Fortuna Imperatrix Mundi: Most of Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 can be seen here on Google Books. The only pages that are missing are: 16-17 for chapter 1 and 23-24, 30-31 for chapter 2. Also the author's first name is J.L. --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 22:31, 18 November 2017 (UTC)
Great thanks User:MrLinkinPark333, so all I need is six missing pages. Much more manageable :) hopefully. — fortunavelut luna 10:16, 19 November 2017 (UTC)

Need a book

Can anyone help me to found following book ?

@Gazal world: There us a preview on GBooks. What pages/chapters are you looking for and for which article(s)? --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 03:11, 6 December 2017 (UTC)

MrLinkinPark333, I have checked Google book. But some pages are missing there. The book is also available on Archives but due to the waitlist I could not able to read it. I need a full book as I want to pass through this book, and want to create articles about Avant Garde and other experimental works on Gujarati wiki (my native language Wiki). I know that, It is not easy or possible for volunteer to get full book. Also, there are available other Sorces, but I want this one as it is a first ever works on Avant Garde. There are not available this type of work in Gujarati. If whole book is not possible, I can narrow my request. (I think, the book is available on Havard University Press). Gazal world (talk) 18:52, 6 December 2017 (UTC)

@Gazal world: Unfortunately, we can not provide a full book scan due to copyright. The table of contents for this book is avaiable on Harvard University Press's website, if that might help you narrow down your request. --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 23:07, 6 December 2017 (UTC)
I would like to request some pages which is missing on google books: pp. 3, 4, 10, 11, 17, 18, 24, 25, and pp. 28 to 41. Gazal world (talk) 15:09, 8 December 2017 (UTC)

MrLinkinPark333, I would like to withdrawn my request as I have borrowed successfully the book from Internet Archive. You all are doing great work on Resource Exchange page.

However, I need a chapter from the following book. I don't know the chaptet number, but it is a chapter about Gujarati novel Bharelo Agni.

According to google books, the chapter starts on page 29 --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 21:28, 10 December 2017 (UTC)
According to this link, the chapter is start from p. 29 and ends with p. 36. --Gazal world (talk) 21:38, 14 December 2017 (UTC)

Australasian Journal of Popular Culture

Does anyone have access to the article "Ambivalent apocalypse: The influence of the Book of Revelation in films and television" by Sarah Baker, published in the Australasian Journal of Popular Culture? Link, Volume 4, Issues 26-51

In this publication (which I'm not sure is a magazine, journal or a newspaper), page 40 covers a good amount of info on Nenjil Or Aalayam. I'd like that page, and if the info continues on page 41, I'd like that too. --Kailash29792 (talk) 15:32, 21 December 2017 (UTC)

Obituary from 1915 in The Labor Advocate

Hello. Would anyone be able to double-check if there is an obituary of Charles P. Fahey in The Labor Advocate, a defunct newspaper, in 1915 please? If so, could you please ping me when you have it? Thank you.Zigzig20s (talk) 20:44, 21 December 2017 (UTC)

To be clear Zigzig20s, are you asking someone to look through the issues that are available online for such an obituary, or to look for any issues that are not online? --Usernameunique (talk) 08:55, 27 December 2017 (UTC)

music reviews on I'm Making Believe

Hello. I am looking for these two music sources for my draft on I'm Making Believe by Ella Fitzgerald and The Ink Spots that appear here on AllMusic:

  • (june?) 1944 review in Metronome: "Then the Spots before my eyes. It's the same old act for the Spots, and its quality is the nadir of everything"...
  • 1949 review in Melody Maker: "The cloying, sentimentalized tunes with their over-dramatized treatment; and the slow, seldom varying drag tempo, which always seems so exactly right for the number, whatever it is."...

Additionally, there was another review in Metronome magazine (December 1944): "Ella redeems the first side with her wonderful chorus..." I want to see if there's more than what I found on Google Books here.

Thank you. --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 03:02, 22 December 2017 (UTC)

@MrLinkinPark333: How confident are you that the years and magazines are correctly matched in the two bullet points above? Allmusic has them the other way around, Melody Maker review in 1949, and Metronome in 1944. I paged through the 12 issues of Metronome from 1949 without finding a review of "I'm Making Believe". For what it's worth, they briefly reviewed many other Ella Fitzgerald titles, and the no-holds-barred language is very much in line with their typical reviews from that era, so the quote probably isn't made up, it just isn't from 1949. Alas my library has a gap in their holdings from 1940 to 1948, so I can't check 1944 for you. --Worldbruce (talk) 06:06, 15 February 2018 (UTC)
@Worldbruce: I accidentally switched the magazines. Thanks for spotting it. --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 13:14, 15 February 2018 (UTC)

Page numbers for Bristol and Exeter Railway & Chard branch line

The articles Bristol and Exeter Railway & Chard branch line are fairly well referenced however many of the citations to books do not include the page numbers. As far as I can see the following books are not available through my local library (some may be out of print). I have requested copies of the other books cited without page numbers on the articles. Would anyone be able to identify the relevant page numbers?

  • Carter, E. F. (1959). An Historical Geography of the Railways of the British Isles. London: Cassell. (for Chard branch)
  • Cobb, Col. M. H. (2003). The Railways of Great Britain, A Historical Atlas. Shepperton: Ian Allan Publishing. ISBN 0-7110-3002-2.
  • MacDermot, E.T. (1927). History of the Great Western Railway. Vol I. London: Great Western Railway. (for B&E)
  • Nicholas, John; Reeve, George (2008). The Okehampton Line. Clophill: Irwell Press Ltd. ISBN 978-1-903266-13-7. (for B&E)
  • Owen, John (1985). The Exe Valley Railway including the Tiverton Branch. Southampton: Kingfisher Railway Productions. ISBN 0-946184-15-1. (for B&E)

Any help or pointers appreciated.— Rod 18:07, 29 December 2017 (UTC)

  • I am a long way from London (or Oxford) & my local library says they can request the books by ILL but they cost £8 a time.— Rod 19:14, 29 December 2017 (UTC)
I won't be able to access Cobb until the new year. However, I'm looking to find a few other page numbers for Bristol as well not included above. --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 22:04, 29 December 2017 (UTC)
Thanks any help would be great - I'm currently working on the Somerset cleanup list where both these appear.— Rod 08:42, 30 December 2017 (UTC)
Ironically MacDermot was one of the ones I was going to do as well for Bristol. If @Andy Dingley: wants to do refs 1 and 2 of MacDermot, I can do Semmens alongside Cobb. Also, the page numbers from Great Western Railway may help locate the missing ones @Rodw: --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 19:00, 30 December 2017 (UTC)

I am looking primarily for her early life, education and career but any pages that mentions her would be helpful. Thanks! --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 04:30, 3 February 2018 (UTC)

English Shonen Jump

To celebrate the the 10th anniversary of the manga series Naruto, Viz Media's own English Shonen Jump made a poll with all of the series' characters (I guess it must be a 2009 issue then). However, I have no idea what issue is that magazine. Regards.Tintor2 (talk) 13:16, 10 February 2018 (UTC)

Straits Times obit (Singapore), 1997

Need the obituary for Barbara Yu Ling (aka Barbara Lee Albery) which may have been published in Singapore's Straits Times on 10 April 1997, page 44. May be available with a subscription or local library access here or here. --Muzilon (talk) 12:50, 11 February 2018 (UTC)

@Muzilon: LexisNexis covers The Straits Times, but not the paid obituaries. The only relevant search result there is a passing mention on 15 July 1997 that Peggy Su! "stars five Singaporeans -Oei, Adrian Pang (who plays Gilbert), Goei, Charles Ong and Barbara Yu-Lin (playing Peggy's parents)." EBSCO, Factiva, NewsBank, and ProQuest also draw a blank for the obit. You may need someone who can visit an NLB library in Singapore or who has access to physical copies of the paper. Worldbruce (talk) 19:33, 18 February 2018 (UTC)
Rats. I've since emailed NLB - they wanted $25 just to email me a scan of the death notice, which seems exorbitant. Do we have any helpful Misplaced Pages editors in Singapore? --Muzilon (talk) 10:30, 22 February 2018 (UTC)
@Muzilon: This page is not the regular haunt of any Sinaporeans, as far as I know. You could reach out to Misplaced Pages:WikiProject Singapore, or ask any and all active members of Category:Wikipedians in Singapore. I've never been successful with similar requests in other places, but you might get lucky. --Worldbruce (talk) 04:49, 24 February 2018 (UTC)

Thank you for the offer, I'm familiar with the book, but I was hoping the Encyclopedia article could help me sort out what is due and undue for the topic, since there is a voluminous amount of scholarship about this (and mostly one disagreement after another) I fear there is a risk of too much technical detail.Seraphim System 09:40, 13 February 2018 (UTC)

LGBTQ

The Santa Cruz County in-queery, Volume 9, Santa Cruz Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgendered Community Center, 1996

This book is cited on the LGBT article for the claim that the Q in LGBTQ stands for questioning. I seek to verify that claim. Benjamin (talk) 03:23, 17 February 2018 (UTC)

@Benjaminikuta: Google Books does prove the claim, but doesn't have the page number. I've emailed Google Books to have them provide the page number. --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 03:31, 17 February 2018 (UTC)
Thanks, although I was hoping for a discussion of the relative prevalence of the term, rather than just a passing mention. Benjamin (talk) 03:39, 17 February 2018 (UTC)
@Benjaminikuta: Maybe the reference could be replaced with an improved one? This encyclopedia mentions that Q can stand for Queer or Questioning and the Q was added to LGBT in 1996 as well (on page 690). I could look for more different sources if you need. --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 03:49, 17 February 2018 (UTC)

MrLinkinPark333, have you had luck before with emailing Google Books for bibliographic details such as that? If so, where do you reach out to? --Usernameunique (talk) 05:45, 17 February 2018 (UTC)
@Usernameunique: At the bottom of the Google Books page, there is a linked titled Report an issue. It'll take you to a link where you can fill in the problem you're having. The last option "I have a question or feedback about a book" is helpful when you find a book that is public domain but not fully accessible on GBooks or if the title/author/other details is wrong. --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 19:40, 17 February 2018 (UTC)

Juno Award for Artist of the Year nominees 1970-73

Hello. I'm look for the nominees for the Juno Award for Artist of the Year from 1970-73 for both Best Male and Female Vocalists. The award was named Top Male/Female Vocalist from 1970-71 and Male/Female Vocalist of the Year from 1972-73. Problem is, the Junos website does not have the nominees for these years and it's shown in the Misplaced Pages article as missing. I copied the 1971 nominees were from Juno Awards of 1971 but I'm not sure if they're right. I've been searching in databases and Google searching but coming up dry. If anyone could provide the names for Juno Award for Artist of the Year from 1970-73 for both Best Male and Female Vocalists, I'd be grateful to finally fill in this gap.
