- Alexander the Great crosses the Hellespont, invading Persia.
- Battle of the Granicus: Alexander the Great defeats the Persian army in Western Asia Minor. He follows this by taking Sardis, the Persian center in western Asia Minor, and liberating Miletus, the principal Ionian city.
- Alexander besieges Halicarnassus, defended for the Persians by the Greek mercenary captain Memnon of Rhodes. He captures the city, but the Persian forces are able to make their escape.
