Carpenter ants usually swarm in the spring and damage the wood in a structure by hollowing it out for nesting . Wood that has been damaged by carpenter ants has no mud like materials as would termites.
Carpenter ants prefer moist wood but will nest in dry also. One would more then likely find there nest in wood that has been dampened by water leaks,like around bathtubs , poorly sealed windows/door frames , roof leaks and poorly flashed chimneys . They are especialy common in open , hollow ,and moist areas such as the missing area behind a dishwasher.
