Built in 1999, it was the first public high school in Barrhaven, replacing its predecessor, Confederation High School. John McCrae is attached to the Walter Baker Sports Center. If offers a wide array of activities for students such as squash, swimming, weightlifting and a library. The school is built on a hill in a residential neighbourhood in old Barrhaven. The school's population consist of 95% white, 2% south asian (oriental), 2% east asian, 1% black. Hence, reviewing the population distribution the school is also called, "Vanilla School".
