Blocked an IP providing valid Reference Desk answers?
I noticed that an IP who contributed valid discussion on the Reference Desk has had their IP blocked and Reference Desk edits reverted (despite their answers not appearing to be vandalism). I just wanted to check if this was intentional. The user is Special:Contributions/92.19.168.253. The reason I'm interested is because the user provided a detailed answer to my reference desk question that I wanted to reply to, but since it got reverted, now I'm at an impasse. - Thanks for your concern. I'm afraid to say that the person who typed that response to you has been banned from Misplaced Pages for many years. Per WP:BAN, banned users are not allowed to contribute anywhere, even if some of their contributions are helpful. - The problem here is that you have people giving ultimatums. If you want to encourage people to ignore you, issue an ultimatum. If you want them to be helpful, try a different approach. Since the ultimatums have been given, I think the cat is out of the bag on that one. Expect no one to do anything; and the reason they won't is because you have demanded it. If people simply had let them work on it on its own time, or if people had simply asked for a timetable from the tech people, and then said "looks good, thank you very much" when they gave you a timetable, it would be done on that time table. Once someone decided "YOU WILL DO THIS BY MAY 3!", all of those tech people simultaneously said "fuck you" and decided they are never going to do your job. Should they act that way? Who cares. Anyone who has ever dealt with any other human being successfully would have predicted they would do that, and that's the only point: if it is predictable that they would drag their feet when people issue ultimatums, don't be surprised when they do exactly that. Hello. I see that you're contributing some much needed improvement to CIR. I think your changes would be clearer if you reinstated the previous version of the text and then do a single edit with your new version. Either that or use the 'in use' tag. Hello. I haven't been on Misplaced Pages for a few months. When I logged in I saw that I am still 'blocked' from editing, but as of my last discussion with you and another editor, I was cleared to edit. Is this an 'autoblock' or other? Guideline and policy news
- The ability to create articles directly in mainspace is now indefinitely restricted to autoconfirmed users.
- A proposal is being discussed which would create a new "event coordinator" right that would allow users to temporarily add the "confirmed" flag to new user accounts and to create many new user accounts without being hindered by a rate limit.
Technical news
- AbuseFilter has received numerous improvements, including an OOUI overhaul, syntax highlighting, ability to search existing filters, and a few new functions. In particular, the search feature can be used to ensure there aren't existing filters for what you need, and the new
equals_to_anyfunction can be used when checking multiple namespaces. One major upcoming change is the ability to see which filters are the slowest. This information is currently only available to those with access to Logstash. - When blocking anonymous users, a cookie will be applied that reloads the block if the user changes their IP. This means in most cases, you may no longer need to do /64 range blocks on residential IPv6 addresses in order to effectively block the end user. It will also help combat abuse from IP hoppers in general. This currently only occurs when hard-blocking accounts.
- The block notice shown on mobile will soon be more informative and point users to a help page on how to request an unblock, just as it currently does on desktop.
- There will soon be a calendar widget at Special:Block, making it easier to set expiries for a specific date and time.

It's been a month since the discussion of the changes took place on the article's talk page. With the exception of user Mimudy24 and her sockpuppet ailsick21, the rest of the editors have agreed that the changes which I've proposed were valid. - I have no idea what is SPI. Both user Mimudy24 and Ailsick21, a newly created account, are fond of writing lengthy posts which veers into intricate details that only a dedicated fan of the subject would be familiar with. It's pretty clear both accounts belong to the same person who rejects any content that they deemed are negative to the subject. And could you please explain what do you mean by "brought in neutral editors to evaluate the situation" and "not really a consensus"??? If you look closely at the edit history of articles on Korean actors, you will realize that there aren't many registered users editing the articles. The two other editors, users Alexanderlee and Heolkpop, who both seem to be regular editors of Korean entertainment articles, were simply kind enough to chip in their thoughts on this matter. Guideline and policy news
- Following a successful request for comment, administrators are now able to add and remove editors to the "event coordinator" group. Users in the event coordinator group have the ability to temporarily add the "confirmed" flag to new user accounts and to create many new user accounts without being hindered by a rate limit. Users will no longer need to be in the "account creator" group if they are in the event coordinator group.
- Following an AN discussion, all pages with content related to blockchain and cryptocurrencies, broadly construed, are now under indefinite general sanctions.
Technical news
- IP-based cookie blocks should be deployed to English Misplaced Pages in June. This will cause the block of a logged-out user to be reloaded if they change IPs. This means in most cases, you may no longer need to do /64 range blocks on residential IPv6 addresses in order to effectively block the end user. It will also help combat abuse from IP hoppers in general. For the time being, it only affects users of the desktop interface.
- The Wikimedia Foundation's Anti-Harassment Tools team will build granular types of blocks in 2018 (e.g. a block from uploading or editing specific pages, categories, or namespaces, as opposed to a full-site block). Feedback on the concept may be left at the talk page.
- There is now a checkbox on Special:ListUsers to let you see only users in temporary user groups.
- It is now easier for blocked mobile users to see why they were blocked.
Arbitration
- A recent technical issue with the Arbitration Committee's spam filter inadvertently caused all messages sent to the committee through Misplaced Pages (i.e. Special:EmailUser/Arbitration Committee) to be discarded. If you attempted to send an email to the Arbitration Committee via Misplaced Pages between May 16 and May 31, your message was not received and you are encouraged to resend it. Messages sent outside of these dates or directly to the Arbitration Committee email address were not affected by this issue.
Miscellaneous
- In early May, an unusually high level of failed login attempts was observed. The WMF has stated that this was an "external effort to gain unauthorized access to random accounts". Under Misplaced Pages policy, administrators are required to have strong passwords. To further reinforce security, administrators should also consider enabling two-factor authentication. A committed identity can be used to verify that you are the true account owner in the event that your account is compromised and/or you are unable to log in.

Poor Attitude

"You're expecting us to post an substandard article to the main page, with obvious and easily fixable errors? In the time it took you to argue with me, you could have already fixed the article and then you'd have had my support. Why are you so opposed to making Misplaced Pages articles better?"
That isn't at all true. The CBC isn't a 'substandard' source, and neither was that article. I do wish to make Misplaced Pages better, and wasn't sure why your tone is so disagreeable. You were not at all clear at what you were unclear about, so I really didn't understand what else to say.
User NorthernFalcon understood I just made the nomination in good faith. I'm not a very prominent Wikipedian, and your lack of compassion and understanding coupled with your personal attack is quite upsetting.

- An RfC about the deletion of drafts closed with a consensus to change the wording of WP:NMFD. Specifically, a draft that has been repeatedly resubmitted and declined at AfC without any substantial improvement may be deleted at MfD if consensus determines that it is unlikely to ever meet the requirements for mainspace and it otherwise meets one of the reasons for deletion outlined in the deletion policy.
- A request for comment closed with a consensus that the {{promising draft}} template cannot be used to indefinitely prevent a WP:G13 speedy deletion nomination.
Technical news
- Starting on July 9, the WMF Security team, Trust & Safety, and the broader technical community will be seeking input on an upcoming change that will restrict editing of site-wide JavaScript and CSS to a new technical administrators user group. Bureaucrats and stewards will be able to grant this right per a community-defined process. The intention is to reduce the number of accounts who can edit frontend code to those who actually need to, which in turn lessens the risk of malicious code being added that compromises the security and privacy of everyone who accesses Misplaced Pages. For more information, please review the FAQ.
- Syntax highlighting has been graduated from a Beta feature on the English Misplaced Pages. To enable this feature, click the highlighter icon (
) in your editing toolbar (or under the hamburger menu in the 2017 wikitext editor). 20th-century Western painting
Hi Jayron32. You protected 20th-century Western painting to prevent any further edit warring from happening. I'm not disputing that, but I'm wondering how it affects the implementation of Misplaced Pages:Files for discussion/2018 June 25#File:'Natura Morta', oil on canvas painting by Giorgio Morandi, 1956, private collection.jpg. One of the non-free uses of the file being discussed in that particular FFD was in that particular article. The FFD close by Jo-Jo Eumerus was to remove file from all articles other than Giorgio Morandi, but the file hasn't been removed from the 20th-century article yet, probably because of the page protection. The non-free use rationale for that particular use, however, has been removed from the file's page. This means that the file is likely to be flagged as WP:NFCC#10c violation for that use by a bot until either (1) a rationale for the non-free use is re-added to the file's page, or (2) the file is removed from the article. FWIW, the FFD was ongoing well before the recent spat of EW started and doesn't appear to be directly related, even though the editors involved in both might be the same. -- Marchjuly (talk) 07:37, 4 July 2018 (UTC)

- Side discussions, irrelevant tangents, jokes, and sniping at others is generally not conducive to arriving at a consensus, so probably don't need to happen in the first place. Insofar as the hatted text isn't producing a consensus building discussion, it's fine to hat it. You've ascribed a motive which is not at all apparent, and there's no evidence you were singled out here, so I don't see why you thought that just because you just happened to be part of those irrelevant discussions, they were closed because of you. - After a discussion at Meta, a new user group called "interface administrators" (formerly "technical administrator") has been created. Come the end of August, interface admins will be the only users able to edit site-wide JavaScript and CSS pages like MediaWiki:Common.js and MediaWiki:Common.css, or edit other user's personal JavaScript and CSS. The intention is to improve security and privacy by reducing the number of accounts which could be used to compromise the site or another user's account through malicious code. The new user group can be assigned and revoked by bureaucrats. Discussion is ongoing to establish details for implementing the group on the English Misplaced Pages.
- Following a request for comment, the WP:SISTER style guideline now states that in the mainspace, interwiki links to Wikinews should only be made as per the external links guideline. This generally means that within the body of an article, you should not link to Wikinews about a particular event that is only a part of the larger topic. Wikinews links in "external links" sections can be used where helpful, but not automatically if an equivalent article from a reliable news outlet could be linked in the same manner.

- The WMF Anti-Harassment Tools team is seeking input on the second set of wireframes for the Special:Block redesign that will introduce partial blocks. The new functionality will allow you to block a user from editing a specific set of pages, pages in a category, a namespace, and for specific actions such as moving pages and uploading files.

A User Falsely Complained Against Me
Hi Jayron, I had an editing dispute on the Infowars TP with Slatersteven. I see he has complained about me, and you have answered him. (I'm a new user.) I thought part of the Infowars page violated NPOV. I stated why I thought this. Slatersteven and I argued back and forth a few times on the TP which, as I understand, is not a violation. He then came over to my user TP and threatened that I was doing something wrong and should better stop. We went back and forth a little and he kept pulling previous things I wrote to try to discredit me. I NEVER intended to do anything politcal. I proposed to make the page a little more neutral, as per NPOV. He kept, however, accusing me of being "tendentious", which quite offends me. He obviously decided not to assume good faith. I can't help that. Please see my TP, as well as my discussion near the bottom of the Infowars TP. You will see that it didn't go so well for me, as very few people actually engaged my opinion. I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Misplaced Pages non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). A formula for calculation the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized). Someone did a short biography of my father on Misplaced Pages which is entirely focused on his 4 yr. as the Kent State Univ. Head Football Coach ('64-'67). It makes no mention of his career prior to that. He was one of the nation's top high school football coaches. He won 3 state and 2 national HS football titles during his six years as the Massillon Washington HS (Ohio) head coach ('58-'63). He was hired at Massillon on the recommendation of former Massillon player and coach, Paul Brown. Prior to Massillon, he was head coach at E. Cleveland Shaw, Upper Sandusky, and Caldwell. He was a football innovator: first use of helmet decals (multicolored stars used at Shaw), first use of a team/school logo helmet decal (leaping Tiger at Massillon), and first use of helmet reward stickers (small stars on front of helmet used at Massillon), first use of colored football shoes (red at Shaw and white at Massillon), first use of a barefooted soccer style kicker (at Shaw), first use of a defensive analyzation system (handheld at Upper and Shaw then converted to an electronic circuit board at Massillon) to determine best play to call based on defense opponent used, use of instamatic camera during games to help determine opponent's defensive alignment to offensive formations (at Massillon), and others. Was the winning coach for the North in the 1960 North/South Ohio HS All Star, coaching Paul Warfield and against Roger Staubach, both of whom went on the become NFL Hall of Fame members. Overall HS record (all as head coach): 109 W, 26 L, and 1 tie.'59 Ohio HS Coach of the Year. I recently completed extensive research regarding my father's coaching career and would like to have it included in a revised biography of him. - Well, I'm afraid that the information needs to be both published (that is, freely available in books, magazines, websites, etc.) and in reliable sources (you'll want to read that link). So emailing me his resume does no good, that isn't a reliable, published source. Anything you have that is a reliable, published source would help though. This article uses many primary sources that are contradicted by high-quality secondary sources. You reverted all my edits and asserted that primary sources from certain journals ought not be removed. Please give me an example of a citation that I removed that is a high-quality secondary source and that has not been deprecated.

Guideline and policy news
- Following a "stop-gap" discussion, six users have temporarily been made interface administrators while discussion is ongoing for a more permanent process for assigning the permission. Interface administrators are now the only editors allowed to edit sitewide CSS and JavaScript pages, as well as CSS/JS pages in another user's userspace. Previously, all administrators had this ability. The right can be granted and revoked by bureaucrats.
Technical news
- Because of a data centre test you will be able to read but not edit the wikis for up to an hour on 12 September and 10 October. This will start at 14:00 (UTC). You might lose edits if you try to save during this time. The time when you can't edit might be shorter than an hour.
- Some abuse filter variables have changed. They are now easier to understand for non-experts. The old variables will still work but filter editors are encouraged to replace them with the new ones. You can find the list of changed variables on mediawiki.org. They have a note which says
Deprecated. Use ... instead. An example isarticle_textwhich is nowpage_title. - Abuse filters can now use how old a page is. The variable is
page_age.

The usernames of all applicants will be shared with the Functionaries team, and they will be requested to assist in the vetting process. - The primary reason that a page gets deleted is that it is about a topic which is not obviously appropriate for Misplaced Pages. The key to writing good articles is first choosing a topic which is appropriate. Which topics are appropriate? It's not that hard, it is those topics for which there is enough reliable source texts which you can use to research and write a comprehensive article. That is, find a topic where you find lots of books, journal articles, magazine articles, etc. about it. That is, lots of really good text that you can cite in the article and so that the article has enough verifiable text to be a reasonable encyclopedia article. If the topic you are trying to write about doesn't have enough source material to work from, it will likely get deleted. --Jayron32 11:58, 11 September 2018 (UTC)

- Following a request for comment, the process for appointing interface administrators has been established. Currently only existing admins can request these rights, while a new RfC has begun on whether it should be available to non-admins.
- There is an open request for comment on Meta regarding the creation a new user group for global edit filter management.
Technical news
- Partial blocks should be available for testing in October on the Test Misplaced Pages and the Beta-Cluster. This new feature allows admins to block users from editing specific pages and in the near-future, namespaces and uploading files. You can expect more updates and an invitation to help with testing once it is available.

- Following a request for comment, the size of the Arbitration Committee will be decreased to 13 arbitrators, starting in 2019. Additionally, the minimum support percentage required to be appointed to a two-year term on ArbCom has been increased to 60%. ArbCom candidates who receive between 50% and 60% support will be appointed to one-year terms instead.
- Nominations for the 2018 Arbitration Committee Electoral Commission are being accepted until 12 October. These are the editors who help run the ArbCom election smoothly. If you are interested in volunteering for this role, please consider nominating yourself.
