The Metropolitan Borough of Stockport is a Metropolitan borough of Greater Manchester, in north west England. It is named after its largest town - Stockport. It also includes the neighbouring towns of Cheadle and Cheadle Hulme, Marple, Bredbury, Reddish and Romiley. Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council governs the borough.

History

The borough was created in 1974, under the Local Government Act 1972 from the former area of the county borough of Stockport and from the administrative county of Cheshire the urban districts of Bredbury and Romiley, Cheadle and Gatley, Hazel Grove and Bramhall and Marple.

Most of the territory of the metropolitan borough was within the historic county boundaries of Cheshire, but areas in the north of the county borough, including the Four Heatons, lie within the historic county palatine of Lancaster, and an area to the east including Mellor and Ludworth is within the historic borders of Derbyshire, becoming part of Marple and the administrative county of Cheshire in 1936.
