Hello

Thanks for your comments on my report of Fan4Life. But the user recently starts another unreasonable argument on Ariana Grande discography again and has mentioned me several times on the talk page. It's quite irritable and disappointed to me. Can you just make some comments? Thank you and have a good day. --U990467 (talk) 14:27, 8 September 2017 (UTC)

Reverts

Please don't make so many reverts. After the first couple you should go for WP:DR or WP:3O. Be mindful of WP:3RR as you've breached it and could have been blocked. --John (talk) 22:09, 14 September 2017 (UTC)

Hi @John:, I appreciate this, and will stop reverting for now; however, the user I am reverting is the blocked long-term vandal User:Nate Speed. See Misplaced Pages:Sockpuppet_investigations/Nate Speed/Archive for a history of their abuse; see, for example, this attack by a previously blocked IP sockpuppet of the master. I have continued to revert past the third reversion because reversions of edits made in evasion of a block are not counted toward the 3RR. I did report this abuse earlier at WP:AIV (see ), though I am not sure if that was the appropriate venue. Sincerely, 青い(Aoi) (talk) 22:15, 14 September 2017 (UTC)
And, just like that, the user jumped to another IP to continue their vandalism. 青い(Aoi) (talk) 22:19, 14 September 2017 (UTC)

What you think about these IPs? Comment

Hi Aoi, what do you think about these 178.22.170.123, 5.167.49.12, 70.35.195.179? All three seem to be interacting including talking on each others pages, as well as trying to get the information added back in and asking in different places, See Misplaced Pages:Reference desk/Entertainment#Toon Boom Animation.27s removed filmography sections, Misplaced Pages:Help desk#Toon Boom Animation.27s removed filmography sections and Misplaced Pages:Reference desk/Computing#Toon Boom Animation.27s removed filmography sections. I mean they won't be able to get the information added back in but appears they are working together. NZFC 07:55, 4 October 2017 (UTC)

Hi NZFC; much thanks for flagging the user's odd behavior at the help desk. I am about 99% sure that all of the IPs are the same person. Specifically, I believe them to be sockpuppets of the banned user Nate Speed, who has a history of jumping IP address (using proxies spanning different continents) to evade his site ban. I have filed a sockpuppetry case on the IPs here; you can view his colorful history at his archived sockpuppet investigations page, and see his ban discussion at ANI here). 青い(Aoi) (talk) 08:08, 4 October 2017 (UTC)
Ok good, glad it’s somewhat under control and being looked into. Will keep an eye on them as well while waiting for the investigation to happen. NZFC 08:13, 4 October 2017 (UTC)
Thanks NZFC, much appreciated. I doubt the IPs will become active again though -- if it is Nate Speed, the user tends to dump IPs after using them once (not sure why), so he'll probably just keep jumping to fresh IPs. Greetings to you in NZ from Hawaii! 青い(Aoi) (talk) 08:19, 4 October 2017 (UTC)
For the record I agree with Aoi's analysis. I would think semi-protection is the way to go. -- zzuuzz 05:45, 18 October 2017 (UTC)

ArbCom 2017 election voter message

Hello, Aoi. Voting in the 2017 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 10 December. All users who registered an account before Saturday, 28 October 2017, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Wednesday, 1 November 2017 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Misplaced Pages arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2017 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:42, 3 December 2017 (UTC)

Some Appreciation

I really appreciate you dealing with any Nate Speed related accounts. Dealing with unregistered users is always frustrating for me, especially when trying to celebrate the holidays peacefully. — FilmandTVFan28 (talk) 10:22, 7 December 2017 (UTC)

FilmandTVFan28, thank YOU for all your help with Nate Speed and the number of other vandals I see you dealing with on a daily basis. If there is anything that I can help you with, please let me know -- I agree that dealing with malicious users who aren't registered can be tricky and frustrating. Happy Holidays! 青い(Aoi) (talk) 02:20, 9 December 2017 (UTC)
You're welcome and thanks. I'll let you if I ever do encounter many more and need assistance. — FilmandTVFan28 (talk) 03:00, 9 December 2017 (UTC)

News and updates for administrators from the past month (July 2018).

Administrator changes

readded KaisaLYmblanter

Guideline and policy news

  • After a discussion at Meta, a new user group called "interface administrators" (formerly "technical administrator") has been created. Come the end of August, interface admins will be the only users able to edit site-wide JavaScript and CSS pages like MediaWiki:Common.js and MediaWiki:Common.css, or edit other user's personal JavaScript and CSS. The intention is to improve security and privacy by reducing the number of accounts which could be used to compromise the site or another user's account through malicious code. The new user group can be assigned and revoked by bureaucrats. Discussion is ongoing to establish details for implementing the group on the English Misplaced Pages.
  • Following a request for comment, the WP:SISTER style guideline now states that in the mainspace, interwiki links to Wikinews should only be made as per the external links guideline. This generally means that within the body of an article, you should not link to Wikinews about a particular event that is only a part of the larger topic. Wikinews links in "external links" sections can be used where helpful, but not automatically if an equivalent article from a reliable news outlet could be linked in the same manner.

WikiHelper489056

So was WikiHelper489056 another Nate Speed sock? The fake download trick is new. Trivialist (talk) 22:08, 29 August 2018 (UTC)

@Trivialist: I'm pretty sure that was Nate Speed. The same IPs that kept adding the email messages to our respective talk pages were the same IPs readding overly detailed, unsourced material to film production company articles with angry, all-caps edit summaries ending with "D:<" and containing self-sensored swear words--it's either him, or someone impersonating him. However, I had read stories of Nate Speed sending malware (which, if initiated, apparently would delete system files on the user's hard drives) to users that reverted his edits on other wikis, so I'm pretty sure it's him. Pinging @GethN7: (if he is active, as he hasn't edited in a while), as I believe he is better informed about Nate's disruption on other wikis (per this comment). Aoi (青い) (talk) 23:49, 29 August 2018 (UTC)
Yeah, looking back through the edits, the trademarks come through on his talk page comments. Shame about that "malware," though, because I always download software sent to me by complete strangers. :) Trivialist (talk) 00:12, 30 August 2018 (UTC)
And here I thought that I was the only one who did that! =) Aoi (青い) (talk) 00:15, 30 August 2018 (UTC)
I regret to say Nate's attempt to destroy computers with malware is sad but true. Thankfully, anyone with sense knows not to mindlessly use programs sent by third parties via email, yet I regret to say he is fool enough to attempt to harm others in that fashion because he cannot get his way, and I apologize since he won't for the fact he attempted such nonsense on yourselves. Please keep me informed on any further illicit acts on his part, I will do whatever is in my power to assist if need be. GethN7 (talk) 00:47, 30 August 2018 (UTC)
@GethN7: Thank you for the information. I've noticed that Nate Speed has been much more active on Misplaced Pages the past month or so. Luckily, our admins are for the most part pretty familiar with him and block him on sight once he starts acting out. However, I still feel really bad that they have to spend so much time and energy cleaning up after his messes. Aoi (青い) (talk) 01:06, 30 August 2018 (UTC)
It's partially something I do willingly because no one deserves his nonsense, and I've had long experience keeping him off other places where he has incited trouble. He's caused Wikia no end of grief, and I've long been helping them keep him off there, where he originally tried to dupe people with the malware emails. I suggest keeping records of his messages for later use by law enforcement, should his activities escalate, especially if he starts sending unsolicited harassment via email. GethN7 (talk) 01:10, 30 August 2018 (UTC)

Guideline and policy news

  • Following a "stop-gap" discussion, six users have temporarily been made interface administrators while discussion is ongoing for a more permanent process for assigning the permission. Interface administrators are now the only editors allowed to edit sitewide CSS and JavaScript pages, as well as CSS/JS pages in another user's userspace. Previously, all administrators had this ability. The right can be granted and revoked by bureaucrats.

Technical news

  • Because of a data centre test you will be able to read but not edit the wikis for up to an hour on 12 September and 10 October. This will start at 14:00 (UTC). You might lose edits if you try to save during this time. The time when you can't edit might be shorter than an hour.
  • Some abuse filter variables have changed. They are now easier to understand for non-experts. The old variables will still work but filter editors are encouraged to replace them with the new ones. You can find the list of changed variables on mediawiki.org. They have a note which says Deprecated. Use ... instead. An example is article_text which is now page_title.
  • Abuse filters can now use how old a page is. The variable is page_age.

Arbitration

  • The Arbitration Committee has resolved to perform a round of Checkuser and Oversight appointments. The usernames of all applicants will be shared with the Functionaries team, and they will be requested to assist in the vetting process. The deadline to submit an application is 23:59 UTC, 12 September, and the candidates that move forward will be published on-wiki for community comments on 18 September.

Grammar improvement????

Hello Aoi. I've been assume that you are here because you want to leave other bad grammars from old edits alone. I must ask you why??? ZeZeNapsid002 (talk) 02:08, 5 September 2018 (UTC)

  • Aoi, good luck with this. ZeZe, "been assume" is incorrect; "I've been assumed" wouldn't even be correct, unless followed by a phrase starting with a to-infinitive. Aoi is here because it's their talk page; the question is really why you are here. "Grammars", when used as a plural, typically means "grammar books" or "grammar systems"; that is not what you are talking about. I could go on. Drmies (talk) 03:09, 5 September 2018 (UTC)

And I could go on to. In this case, editing. For your information, I didn't talk to you I the beginning when you went to Aoi. ATM, I'm here to still editing and

working everyday. No chance to take this on me folks. ZeZeNapsid002 (talk) 03:52, 5 September 2018 (UTC)

BTW...

...this is what I always think of when I see your edits go by. Drmies (talk) 03:13, 5 September 2018 (UTC)

@Drmies: Thanks for the link, I (genuinely) learned something new today! And I'm glad you associate my user name with something more interesting than this AOI. Aoi (青い) (talk) 03:40, 5 September 2018 (UTC)

What evidence do you want?

What evidence do i need to provide to show Ariana is a songwriter? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lenhpia (talkcontribs) 00:19, 14 September 2018 (UTC)

@Lenhpia: You might want to open up a discussion at Talk:Ariana Grande. I want to note that I am not opposed to adding "songwriter" to the infobox, but as another user noted, this was brought up several times before on the talk page and was shot down each time. I think circumstances may have changed with her latest album, however, since she has taken a much larger songwriting role in Sweetener. Ideally, it would be good to find a reliable secondary source that states that she is a "songwriter" or at least discusses the increased role she's taken in writing her own music. However, I've done a quick look on Google news and haven't been able to find any source that does that. Technically, we should not be adding any material to Ariana Grande's article without a reliable source per Misplaced Pages's policy on biographies of living people (WP:BLP).
On the other hand, if other users are inclined to accept it, it may be possible to use the liner notes of her Sweetener album as a primary source of her role as a songwriter, though this is kind of iffy since Misplaced Pages generally forbids the synthesis of primary sources (see WP:SYNTH). In either case, I think opening a discussion at the Ariana Grande talk page would be the best thing to do here. I hope this helps. Thanks, Aoi (青い) (talk) 00:34, 14 September 2018 (UTC)

A recommendation I'd like to make concerning a certain problem child

Based on my long experience with Nate Speed/Spidgewood, he's, frankly, insane. He will forego eating, sleeping, and bathroom breaks for his obsessive desire to edit what he considers his "property", and if he targets a page, expect it to be a long-term target.

Temporary protection of these pages will NOT be enough. they need to be semi-permanent at least to seriously put a dent in his terrorism, and if you see all caps ranting and profanity (he'll add asterisks to the cursing in places he knows have filters or where he's trying to be a bit more subtle than usual).

Wikia has enabled this on several wikis he's terrorized, and it's reduced his terrorism to almost nil. TV Tropes completely removed manual registration (it requires admin confirmation of accounts there), and that has completely frozen him out, and since that isn't practicable here, the best way to stop him is to put a semi-permanent extended autoconfirmed lock on all pages he's known to target until he throws in the towel for awhile (how long, I can't say, but the more he realizes he's left powerless, the longer he stays away).

If I can be of further assistance, do let me know. GethN7 (talk) 20:39, 20 September 2018 (UTC)

@GethN7: Thank you for this. I'm not an administrator here on enwiki, but I agree fully with your approach. I think the admins here are pretty hesitant to enact long-term extended confirmed protection on articles (there's an attitude here that we should take the least restrictive means to combat abuse so as to not interfere with non-abusive users' ability to edit). In the recent past, however, admins who were familiar with Nate have not hesitated to enact long-term regular semi-protection (up to a year), which was generally pretty effective in keeping him at bay. If he continues targeting the same pages (which we both know he will), I'll request stronger protection at the affected articles as the abuse occurs.
In all honesty, Nate's usually been nothing more than a nuisance. However, ever since he started sending malware to users, I've become convinced that it might be worth it to try to get the Wikimedia Foundation to step in and see if it's possible to take some kind of legal action or restriction against him. Even though his emailed/linked malware are poorly worded and most users would be able to see through the abuse, it's still a blatant violation of section 4 of Wikimedia's terms of use. When I have a moment, I'm going to send an email to Wikimedia's legal team and see if any action is possible. Aoi (青い) (talk) 22:21, 20 September 2018 (UTC)

Technical news

  • Partial blocks should be available for testing in October on the Test Misplaced Pages and the Beta-Cluster. This new feature allows admins to block users from editing specific pages and in the near-future, namespaces and uploading files. You can expect more updates and an invitation to help with testing once it is available.
  • The Foundations' Anti-Harassment Tools team is currently looking for input on how to measure the effectiveness of blocks. This is in particular related to how they will measure the success of the aforementioned partial blocks.
  • Because of a data centre test, you will be able to read but not edit the Wikimedia projects for up to an hour on 10 October. This will start at 14:00 (UTC). You might lose edits if you try to save during this time.

Arbitration

  • The Arbitration Committee has, by motion, amended the procedure on functionary inactivity.
  • The community consultation for 2018 CheckUser and Oversight appointments has concluded. Appointments will be made by October 11.
  • Following a request for comment, the size of the Arbitration Committee will be decreased to 13 arbitrators, starting in 2019. Additionally, the minimum support percentage required to be appointed to a two-year term on ArbCom has been increased to 60%. ArbCom candidates who receive between 50% and 60% support will be appointed to one-year terms instead.
  • Nominations for the 2018 Arbitration Committee Electoral Commission are being accepted until 12 October. These are the editors who help run the ArbCom election smoothly. If you are interested in volunteering for this role, please consider nominating yourself.

  • Partial blocks is now available for testing on the Test Misplaced Pages. The new functionality allows you to block users from editing specific pages. Bugs may exist and can be reported on the local talk page or on Meta. A discussion regarding deployment to English Misplaced Pages will be started by community liaisons sometime in the near future.
  • A user script is now available to quickly review unblock requests.
  • The 2019 Community Wishlist Survey is now accepting new proposals until November 11, 2018. The results of this survey will determine what software the Wikimedia Foundation's Community Tech team will work on next year. Voting on the proposals will take place from November 16 to November 30, 2018. Specifically, there is a proposal category for admins and stewards that may be of interest.

Arbitration

  • Eligible editors will be invited to nominate themselves as candidates in the 2018 Arbitration Committee Elections starting on November 4 until November 13. Voting will begin on November 19 and last until December 2.
  • The Arbitration Committee's email address has changed to arbcom-en@wikimedia.org. Other email lists, such as functionaries-en and clerks-l, remain unchanged.

Hello, Thank you for leaving a kind message.

Nice to meet you :) Appreciate the comprehensive guide about Misplaced Pages.

I assume you reverted the edits I've done due to misusing of minor edit option. But I didn't check the option in the first edit I made, removing the original citation. , I rightfully marked my second edit as a minor change. Havenoftree (talk) 13:28, 3 November 2018 (UTC)

@Havenoftree:, you are correct. I should not have reverted that edit and I apologize. I was reviewing edits in pending changes and did not notice that you had made two edits. I have restored your edits. Thank you for pointing out my mistake and I hope you have a great day. Aoi (青い) (talk) 13:34, 3 November 2018 (UTC)
@Aoi:, Your welcome. It's true that I'm a newbie and not really used to Misplaced Pages so your note will be a lot of help. Have a nice day!

Why did you delete Dollshot? Please reinstate . . .

I see that you deleted the article I wrote for Dollshot, please reinstate it. Back in June a previous version of the article was in AfD because of a perceived lack of notability of the band. The band has received press since June that meets wikipedia's guidelines (see BlackBook, Annie O interview link and WNYC). Please look at the citations since the last time it was up for discussion. Artaria195 (talk) 01:57, 10 November 2018 (UTC)

@Artaria195: I am not sure what you are talking about. I am not an administrator and therefore do not have the ability to delete articles. Aoi (青い) (talk) 03:02, 10 November 2018 (UTC)
@Aoi:My apologies, I misread. Thank you for your response.Artaria195 (talk) 04:41, 10 November 2018 (UTC)

IMDb sources cited in article

hi, Aoi (青い) (talk). You recently tagged the IMDb citations in the article on Noah K with "better source needed". Rather than cite K's IMDb page itself, here are link to the cast/crew lists of each of the shows cited. Can you replace with these and remove the tag? This would pass WP:CITINGIMDB. Here are the links: Wonder Years "Summer Song" (cast): https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0750366/ Wonder Years "The Family Car" (cast): https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0750371/ Wonder Years Full Series Cast: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0094582/fullcredits Once and Again "Chance of a Lifetime" (music dept): https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0665690/fullcredits/?ref_=tt_ov_st_sm And, in terms of the other source you tagged with "better source needed" about the songs on the album Dollshot, here is a link to AllMusic, which has song composer info: https://www.allmusic.com/album/dollshot-mw0002120090. Can you please add this source and remove the "better source needed" tag. Thank you, Artaria195 (talk) 12:21, 20 November 2018 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) IMDB is not a reliable source. - FlightTime (open channel) 17:08, 20 November 2018 (UTC)
Hi, User:FlightTime,That seems to be debatable, cast lists on IMDb are in the category of 'disputed uses' here WP:CITINGIMDB. But, in any event, since this is not a major point of the article, but rather a biographical detail, it seems like IMDb should suffice. Where else do you recommend finding a cast list from a television show from 1989? Thank you Artaria195 (talk) 17:45, 20 November 2018 (UTC)
@Artaria195: Very good. Please start a debate on the article's talk page. Please do not copy/paste user signatures, to reply to an user comment use {{re}} or to alert an editor use {{ping}}. - FlightTime (open channel) 18:30, 20 November 2018 (UTC)
Thanks for letting me know, I won't copy/past sigs in the future, sorry about that. Is there a way to alert editors on the article talk page so that someone might see the discussion? Artaria195 (talk) 18:35, 20 November 2018 (UTC)
Yes, {{Ping}}, but be careful of Misplaced Pages:Canvassing. - FlightTime (open channel) 18:39, 20 November 2018 (UTC)
@FlightTime: I'm curious why you deleted the sections of the article that were sourced with IMDb, after I provided sources and have been engaging in discussion with you. Can you please revert? This seems like a rather drastic response, shouldn't the article remain as it was and let others find additional sources assuming you disagree that IMDb itself suffices? Thank you, Artaria195 (talk) 18:47, 20 November 2018 (UTC)
@Artaria195: First, let's get off Aoi's talk page it's not respectful for other editors to have a discussion on someone elses talk page. To answer your question just look at the discussion you started. If you have any further questions of me, please ask them on my talk page. Aoi, sorry for jamming up your talk :P - FlightTime (open channel) 18:56, 20 November 2018 (UTC)
Of course, apologies Aoi, Artaria195 (talk) 19:01, 20 November 2018 (UTC)
@FlightTime: Definitely not a problem – thank you very much for helping answer Artaria195's question for me while I was offline, I really appreciate your help. Much thanks, Aoi (青い) (talk) 19:55, 20 November 2018 (UTC)
Thank you :) - FlightTime (open channel) 20:27, 20 November 2018 (UTC)

User talk:Snorfeldoodle

It seems that you welcomed User talk:Snorfeldoodle one minute after I did, but my welcome is from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. We should wait and see if Snorfeldoodleresponds to either of us. --Dthomsen8 (talk) 19:20, 22 November 2018 (UTC)

List of Child Prodigies

Hey, thanks for fixing the mistake I made. I accidentally deleted somebody off of the list who shouldn't have been deleted. I meant to only delete Kelvin Doe and one of the chess prodigies that weren't children when they won fame in the chess world. Thanks again. Otter debacle

I keep providing sources to show Otter is not a principal division or subsidiary of WarnerMedia- that is Warner Bros., HBO, and Turner. I do not like conflict or dispute. Thanks.BBMatBlood (talk) 21:07, 30 November 2018 (UTC)

Guideline and policy news

  • Following a request for comment, the Mediation Committee is now closed and will no longer be accepting case requests.
  • A request for comment is in progress to determine whether members of the Bot Approvals Group should satisfy activity requirements in order to remain in that role.
  • A request for comment is in progress regarding whether to change the administrator inactivity policy, such that administrators "who have made no logged administrative actions for at least 12 months may be desysopped". Currently, the policy states that administrators "who have made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least 12 months may be desysopped".
  • A proposal has been made to temporarily restrict editing of the Main Page to interface administrators in order to mitigate the impact of compromised accounts.

Miscellaneous

  • In late November, an attacker compromised multiple accounts, including at least four administrator accounts, and used them to vandalize Misplaced Pages. If you have ever used your current password on any other website, you should change it immediately. Sharing the same password across multiple websites makes your account vulnerable, especially if your password was used on a website that suffered a data breach. As these incidents have shown, these concerns are not pure fantasies.
  • Misplaced Pages policy requires administrators to have strong passwords. To further reinforce security, administrators should also consider enabling two-factor authentication. A committed identity can be used to verify that you are the true account owner in the event that your account is compromised and/or you are unable to log in.
