Faiz Shakir is an American political aide, who currently works as the campaign manager for Bernie Sanders' 2020 presidential campaign.

Career

Shakir completed his B.A. in government at Harvard University. He completed J.D. from Georgetown University.

He has also worked as a communications aide in the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy. In 2004, he joined John Kerry's presidential campaign as a junior staffer.

In 2005, Shakir began working for the Center for American Progress (CAP). There he launched their ThinkProgress blog, of which he was the editor-in-chief. He is credited with building it into an outlet providing policy analysis and reporting. When he left in 2012, it had 4.7 million unique visitors a month. He also advised CAP's leadership on policy matters.

In 2012, Shakir became House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi's Director of New Media. During that time he was involved in advocacy for the LGBT and Muslim American communities. After that he served as a senior adviser to Democratic Senate Leader Harry Reid of Nevada. Shakir also briefly worked for Bernie Sanders 2016 presidential campaign. According to the Podesta emails, John Podesta (then chair of the Hillary Clinton campaign) chided Shakir for advising Sanders.

Shakir joined the American Civil Liberties Union as its Political Director on January 20, 2017. In March, Shakir helped the ACLU launch the , which engages volunteers to mobilise in defence of civil liberties. Shaker had first pitched the idea for such a website to ACLU Director Anthony Romero in 2015; at that time Romero had dismissed the idea as too radical. The website attracted 225,000 volunteers in just 8 weeks, coordinating projects such as meetings with judges to film screenings to panels on law enforcement and immigration.

Shakir is the first Muslim campaign manager for a major party U.S. presidential campaign.

Personal life

Faiz Shakir was born Pakistani immigrants to the United States, growing up in Florida. A fan of baseball, Shakir played baseball for four years while studying at Harvard. He is a Muslim.
