The concept is usually taken to encompass Nagorno-Karabakh (a self-proclaimed, predominately Armenian republic within the internationally recognized borders of Azerbaijan), Javakhk (a predominately Armenian region in present-day Georgia), and Nakhichevan (an autonomous exclave of Azerbaijan that was at various times in history part of successive Armenian kingdoms, regions, and republics and once boasted an important Armenian population). More extreme irredentists take the concept to include parts of northwestern Iran and Cilicia as well while more moderate Armenian irredentists take the term to exclusively include the territories of Russian Armenia lost to Turkey in the Treaty of Kars (the Kars, Ardahan, and Iğdır provinces) and Nagorno-Karabakh.
