L. Suryanarayana Tejasvi (born 16 November 1990), known better as Tejasvi Surya, is an Indian politician. He is the Member of Parliament in the 17th Lok Sabha from the Bangalore South (Lok Sabha constituency).

Early and personal life

Surya was born on 16 November 1990 to Rama and Dr. L.A. Suryanarayana, who had previously been Joint Commissioner of Excise. When he was a 9-yr old student, he sold 17 of his paintings, collected ₹1220 and donated it to the Army Kargil Relief Fund through his school principal. He was awarded the National Balashree Honour in 2001 while studying at Kumaran's Children Home School, Thyagarajanagar. He graduated from Bangalore Institute of Legal Studies with a Bachelor of Academic Law and an LLB.

In 2008, Surya founded an NGO called Arise India which works in rural development and education to create a "strong youth vote bank". He has co-founded the Centre for Entrepreneurial Excellence, which works on projects in entrepreneurship and education. He has previously written for IndiaFacts.

He is a strong supporter of Hindutva and believes in the pride of Indian culture. He credits Vir Savarkar, Aurobindo, BR Ambedkar and Swami Vivekananda for inspiring him and shaping his ideology. He is an RSS swayamsevak and has been a supporter of legalising same-sex marriage.

Political career

Early years

He was an active member of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and General Secretary of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha. He gained national recognition for leading the Digital Communications Team of Karnataka BJP during the 2018 Karnataka Legislative Assembly election. He had actively contributed to the Bharatiya Janata Party campaign for the 2014 Indian general election, organising and addressing more than 100 public meetings across the country. He had previously been chosen by the UK High Commission for a course on leadership, held in the United Kingdom and in 2017 was one of the key leaders behind BJP's ‘Mangalore Chalo’ rally. As a lawyer, he had represented many BJP leaders like Mahesh Hegde (editor of Post-Card News), Pratap Simha (MP from Mysore) and Ashok Haranhalli, who was investigating corruption by B.S. Yeddyurappa. He has been mentored by R. Ashoka and V. Somanna.

2019 Lok Sabha Elections

The Bangalore South (Lok Sabha constituency) was held since 1996 by former minister Ananth Kumar till his death in 2018. Tejasvi Surya was chosen for the election over Kumar's wife, Tejaswini Ananth Kumar, due to his previous work. While she initially had the support of BJP Karnataka state president B.S. Yeddyurappa, senior BJP and RSS leader B.L. Santosh convinced the party's leadership to choose Surya. Some other suggestions for contesting from the constituency were Suresh Kumar, Rajajinagar MLA, and Ravi Subramanya, Basavanagudi MLA and Surya's paternal uncle. He won the elections by defeating B. K. Hariprasad of Congress by 3,31,192 votes.

Controversy

In March 2019, Tejasvi Surya faced backlash over quoting Tarek Fatah's "sexual" remarks on Arab women, in a Tweet from 2015. Additionally, the Congress shared screenshots of tweets posted by a woman who alleged that he abused her, and asked the BJP whether Surya's candidature is a continuation of the BJP's abusive remarks. Following this and the announcement of his Lok Sabha candidature, Surya obtained a temporary injunction against 49 media outlets and social media platforms restraining them from publishing any "defamatory statements" against him. He had also called the supporters of Narendra Modi as patriots, and claimed that those who did not support Modi were "anti-India". On another occasion, he had said that the "BJP should unapologetically be a party for Hindus".
