Founded by Chris Butler (also known as Jagad Guru Siddhaswarupananda Paramahamsa) in the 1970s, the organization combines the teaching of yoga with aspects of Hinduism.
The organization is politically active in Hawaii and has fielded candidates in political positions. The political candidates have often pushed for reforms aligning with the principles of the foundation, including environmentalism, vegetarianism and opposition to homosexuality.
