Suspicious Photo

That photograph looks really suspicious to me.

I removed the image (Image:Marcusc2a.JPG); as noted above, it's had some funky manipulation done on it, and, more importantly, shows basically nothing of the island itself. It's not encyclopedic. I also removed the {cleanup} tag because aside from that image, the article is not too bad. CDC (talk) 23:53, 30 November 2006 (UTC)

Disparate geographical coordinates

The article provides two different sets of coordinates for the location of the island. __meco 16:04, 28 June 2007 (UTC)

Minami Torishima Airstrip

I looked at the image and saw an airstrip, which isn't mentioned on the article. GE confirms the existence of the airstrip too. XD I guess there could be some details about it and a wikilink to the airport article. Anyways I did a little scanning around and found out no article exists about the airstrip. For now I've found 2 sites (here and here, mentioning thorough details about the airstrip (ICAO Code: RJAM, already added to the ICAO code list). Name of. . article

Air Strip . .

Roleketu (talk) 13:52, 14 February 2009 (UTC)I was stationed on Minami Torishima (we knew it as Marcus Island) from August 1977 to August 1978 as my first assignment in the US Coast Guard. Yes there is an air strip which is visible in the image. Every Thursday the Air Force would bring supplies and mail via a C130 cargo plane. The C130 would approach from the south and as soon as the tires touched runway the air crew would reverse pitch the propellers in addition to applying brakes because the runway was quite short. Once a week we (the Coasties) would play softball against the Japanese stationed on the Island. The game was played on the parking section with the outfield playing on the runway. One learned quite quickly NOT to slide to a base.

I was the last Independent Duty Corpsman on Marcus, and was there when we turned the Loran Station over to the Japanese Maritime Safety Administration. By that time we were playing softball 2 to 3 times a week, and yes, sliding into base was a bad thing.  :-)

"Unusual"?

"unusual in that it has a saucer-like profile, with a raised outer rim of between 5 and 9 metres (16 and 30 ft) above sea level."

How is this unusual? This describes a perfectly normal coral island with an eroded central bowl. Pretty much every atoll on the planet is saucer-shaped, with or without a lagoon in the inner bowl (depending on its elevation relative to the current sea level.) 2601:441:4180:2440:7D71:2110:D39D:7459 (talk) 05:17, 15 January 2017 (UTC)

I had the same thought. If it's true that "unusual claims require extraordinary evidence", then so do claims of being "unusual" require, at least, some evidence. And since none is given, I'll be BOLD and remove the "unusual"-ness. Anybody who has some good evidence can – of course! – reinstate it. yoyo (talk) 17:34, 1 April 2018 (UTC)

Island disappeared?

It hasn't actually disappeared from satellite imagery, as claimed by that TV show, because you can find such images on Google Maps and other public satellite databases. Don't believe everything you hear on TV. Even the "science" channel is focused more on entertaining fiction rather than on educating you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.16.195.87 (talk) 00:10, 22 October 2017 (UTC)

Marcus Island and categories

Feinoa, please discuss your changes here, particularly removing Marcus Island and the categories . I read the edit summary, however I wasn't able to find a source saying that that the name Marcus Island is no longer used. Could you clarify this please? As for the categories, I am not sure what is the reason for removal.--DreamLinker (talk) 20:18, 25 September 2019 (UTC)

The name "Marcus island" is not used much anymore. It is generally called Minamitori island. See for example on Google Maps. Marcus island is an informal historical name, so I think it should be only mentioned a little in the article. (Artanisen (talk) 23:30, 7 November 2019 (UTC))
